Mashing up an array of influences, including dancehall, indie rock, electro and R &B , Toronto duo BONJAY (Alanna Stuart on vocals, Ian “Pho” Swain on beats and effects) are poised to become one of 2011’s breakthrough acts. Remixes for such powerhouse labels as Mad Decent and Ninjatune, and opening gigs for the likes of Diplo and Tune-Yards have only cemented their reputation as talents to watch. In this entrancing club set, they showcase the distinctive sound you can hear on their last EP, Broughtupsy, and their newest single, “Stumble/Creepin.”

He’s been called “Canada’s hardest-working DJ.” A fixture on the Toronto dance music scene for more than 15 years, DEKO-ZE (a.k.a. Michael Babb) has played just about everywhere there is to play in Canada, and has more club residencies that any reasonable person can hope to keep track of. This edition of Live Sessions Canada captures him doing what he does best: laying down irresistible house beats and working the crowd into frenzied raptures through the sheer force of his charismatic stage presence.
2011 was the year of The Killabits. The Toronto-based dubstep duo (Sam KBz and Biz Davis) released their debut EP on L.A.’s Play Me Records, toured furiously coast to coast, and remixed everything that wasn’t nailed down. They’re renowned locally for having created, in partnership with Zeds Dead, the weekly dubstep showcase Bassmentality, which has played host to such talents as Nero, Skrillex and Doctor P. This edition of Live Sessions Canada captures The Killabits at the climax of this year’s “Hard Feelings” tour, playing to a wildly supportive hometown crowd at Toronto’s The Mod Club.
Here’s how Toronto’s BEATFACE introduce themselves in their bio: “Take two high school friends. Challenge them to step out of their musical comfort zones, providing them with only a keyboard, a voice and a couple of laptops. Then, throw in a drummer. You’ll end up with BEATFACE, Toronto’s urban rock & roll band (without guitars).” Founded in 2006, this inventive three-piece (singer Paul, producer Book and drummer Jonny) seamlessly meld live drums and electronics to fashion a sound at once beatwise and poppishly accessible. Their musical adventurousness is evident both in their original material (showcased to impressive effect on last year’s debut EP Amy) and in their choice of covers (AC/DC, Metallica). bpm:tv’s Live Sessions Canada captures them doing what they do best for an appreciative hometown crowd.
