Sunday’s Sweets – June 3

June 3rd, 2012

Posted by Scott Willats

Last week Vegas got to me. There was no time to get to my computer, let alone sleep. But with great privilege comes great responsibility. The good news about my adventure last week is that I got to see some sick DJs play brand new tunez. And therein lies my responsibility: to relay these hot tracks to you while they’re still poppin’ fresh. Let the baton passing begin.

SWEETS

This week brought a double dose from Montreal hit men Adventure Club. One track takes the vocals from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs‘ “Maps” and chops it up quite nice, while the other is the background sound for the new Krewella track. Both go hard. Both are free.

Adventure Club – Wait: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Adventure Club – Rise & Fall feat. Krewella: LISTEN TO IT HERE

The next comes from Ado. Part of the Blood Music stable, he has switched teams to Twin Turbo for the release of Pressure. This new EP is full of raunchy electro techno that will keep you up all night — but it’s the track “Right On” that has me on the edge of my seat. Worth the purchase all on its own. You can get it on Beatport HERE.

Ado – Pressure EP Preview: LISTEN TO IT HERE

The latest Boysnoize Records release is exactly what you’d expect from BNR: innovative, different and completely mental. Les Petits Pilous always seem to find a sound nobody is messing with. You might not like it at first, but like a fine wine…

Les Petit Pilous – Drop It: LISTEN TO IT HERE

And speaking of Boys Noize, I have an absolute gem from him right hurrrr. He has created a four-minute tribute to Donna Summer, in a style I could only describe as: washy flossy techno. I think it’s absolute fire. Perfect for your next party!

Boys Noize – Donnastag: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Shook, possibly the coolest cat in the game, has released a track that lives up to his reputation as one smooth hustler. If you got the one you’re crushing on in the car, this is the tune your mojo is dying for you to play.

Shook – Love For You: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Sticking with that sexy vibe, we got something here from two of the most soulful artists in the game. Ellie Goulding takes on The Weeknd‘s humungous banger “High for This” and puts her own adorable touch on it, while Xaphoon Jones from Chiddy Bang gives her a different beat to play with. Together, they come up with something simply breathtaking.

Ellie Goulding – High For This (Produced by Xaphoon Jones): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Get used to this one. Avicii gives away a brand new track as a thank you to his fans for hitting 2 million likes. Hate if you want, but there’s a good reason Avicii is maybe the second or third biggest name in EDM — and  this song is living proof.

Avicii – Two Million (Original Mix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Speaking of big name DJs: Afrojack has taken on a classic and given it his trademark electro touch. I’m always a little hesitant when I hear a Michael Jackson track remixed, and to be honest I’m not 100 percent on board with this one. But decide on your own — you may well find yourself  giving it more than one listen.

Michael Jackson – Bad (Afrojack Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

This song has been remixed, like … what? A million times? Hip-hop, rock, dance — it doesn’t matter, the strings in Phantom of the Opera have been tried and tested. Many times the result have been indifferent, but this time it’s done right. It feels like Ryan Enzed makes music every second of his existence. And why not, right?

Ryan Enzed – Phantom of Electro: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Aaaaaaaand … I’ll stop there. Be sure to check in next week. In honor of UEFA EURO 2012 kicking off in Ukraine and Poland on June 8, I’ll be breaking down group by group, country by country. Soccer, you say?!? No, amigo … we’re going EDM with this. We’re going to take a look not at the footballing ability of the competing countries, but their music-making ability. Sweden, Spain, Italy, England, France, Germany, Netherlands — all home to heavy-hitting, world renowned DJs. To say nothing of Ireland, Portugal, Croatia, Denmark, Russia, Greece, Czech Rep, and Poland — all with hidden gems of their own, all capable of competing with the big boys.

So grab your flag and lift it high — cuz bpm:tv presents The real Euro 2012!

Sweets of the Week – May 4

May 4th, 2012

Posted by Scott Willats

It’s Friiiiiiiday — and not just any Friday. The bpm:tv Nation will be venturing into Knights territory to celebrate the premiere of Grand Benders at Cobra London.

The only downside is that I can’t be in two places at once, which means I’m going to have to miss Goldroom tonight at the Gladstone. This is a Pop Kult! event presented by Mansion, so you know the crowd will be knowledgeable, the drinks will be flowing and the music will be top-notch. If you find yourself in the dot this evening, head for Queen and Gladstone, homie.

I’m stoked for the trek to London. An hour’s drive means I need to get on my A-game and prep a road trip playlist with the freshest/flyest new beatz. And so, without further ado, your Sweets of the Week …

Start off with a brand new banger from the beatdown king. Aoki and Dimas go apeshit on this one.

Steve Aoki & Angger Dimas feat. Iggy Azalea – Beat Down: LISTEN TO IT HERE

I feel like I should be on the Blood Music payroll. I mean, any time I hear anything brand new from these guys, I’m all over it. Then again, I feel like I should be paying them for delivering such a steady supply of the baddest beats. So let’s maybe just call it even. Anyway, here’s a double dose: first with Ado, then LeBreton‘aaaaave it!

Ado – Home: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Jagerverb – Vega (Lebreton Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

If you can’t make the Pup Kult! event tonight, then download this asap: it’s the closest you can get to actually being there. Josh Legg is in the creative zone right now, so look out for a Goldroom feature on the blog next week.

Goldroom – Aviva Mix 2012: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Also very much hoping this track gets bumped at the Gladstone tonight. L.A. native Le Youth has a banger on his hands here. Oh, and it’s free. Copped!

Le Youth – Dance With Me: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Track has barely been released and already the remixes are pouring in. This one employs my favourite recipe: one cup Wolf plus two scoops Disco. Go in boyz.

Wolfgang Gartner- Redline (Disco Pharaoh Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

My progressive peeps: you know I always got you covered, right? Dyro & Rene Kuppens tackle you in full stride with this orgy of synth and bass sounds. Has the smell of summer all over it.

Dyro & Rene Kuppens – Raid: LISTEN TO IT HERE

For many of us, May will be known as “Pryda Month.” The Swedish God of House Music is set to unleash his three-CD compilation Eric Prydz Presents Pryda on May 21. 3 CD’s of Eric is about enough to fill your sets for the next year. Doubtless this mammoth album will get leaked soon enough. In the meantime, we’ll just have to settle for this anthem.

Finally, this. Far from new, I realize, but sometimes you gotta bring a track back — backtrack, you dig? Jacques Lu Cont has been quietly making a return to glory of late. But it’s his take on a house classic that remains top of my iPod playlist. Hope this brings you back. U know i love you better …

Juliet – Avalon (Jacques Lu Cont Versus Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

VISUAL SWEETS

Dada Life take the typical house video and put a spin on it. Careful, fellas — watch the whole thing before you comment.

It’s no secret that I have a serious Kris Menace obsession. This track is made for clubs, movie soundtracks and bus rides alike. Only Menace can pull that off.

Can’t just play one Menace. I mean, are you kidding me?

Metronomy – Heartbreaker (Kris Menace Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

And that’s it for the week. Just a reminder, bpm:tv Nation is gonna be in London tonight — and trust me when I say “It’s going down.” We’ll be celebrating the launch of bpm:tv’s newest series, so come on out and meet the stars of Grand Benders. Lehhh go!

Belated Sweets of the Week – April 1

April 1st, 2012

Though the week just past did bring the release of new tracks from Sound Remedy and Porter Robinson, plus an album from Rusko, it felt on the whole like the electronic music world was suffering from a bit of a WMC hangover. Everybody seemed to be functioning on half-speed. Still, I believe the majority were fuelling their tanks for what promises to be a summer to remember.

Skream and Benga absolutely killed The Hoxton in Toronto on Thursday night, These two never seem to deliver a weak set. If ever you have the chance, be sure to check them out.

Now, on to the sweets!

This is probably one of the best EPs I’ve heard so far this year. Expect Sound Remedy to be a household name very very soon.

Sound Remedy – Haunted Valor: LISTEN TO IT HERE

The prodigy returns!

Porter Robinson – Language (Original Mix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Fresh from Miami, pure sickness from the Mau5 and friends.

mau5hax – Fractals (Original Mix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

mau5hax – Titty Sprinkles (Original Mix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Congorock‘s latest anthem.

Congorock – Agarta: LISTEN TO IT HERE

The sound of Blooooooooooood Music.

Tai – At The Disco (Ado Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Slowly but surely, Laidback Luke is becoming the best big room house producer in EDM.

Kerli – Zero Gravity (Laidback Luke Club Mix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

A sick remix of a classic track.

Foreigner – Cold as ice (A.Skillz & Nick Thayer Bootleg): LISTEN TO IT HERE

The perfect live set.

Soldiers in the Blood Army

November 30th, 2011

It’s amazing. Fake Blood has one of the most distinctive sounds in all of music — yet he has managed to find a militia of devious DJs who share his refined ear. The only fault most electro heads have ever been found with Fake Blood is the fact that he doesn’t release as much content as we want to hear. No worries: his Blood Music label has become the perfect remedy for all those desperate fans — the Roc-A-Fella to his Jay-Z. Another Blood Music soldier is set to drop a release in the coming month; we got a sneak preview of some of the tracks yesterday, and they are big: the Big le-Bowski Big.

Bowski ‘s new EP, Poppies will be released on Decemeber 18, and these songs get your attention quickly. Due to a shortage of time, I can’t break them down — and to be honest, they are too fresh for me even to try. But as you would expect, Bowski delivers. All I can tell you is that the formula is pretty much the same for all of the artists in the Blood Music stable: dark-yet-pleasant-soulful-mindf*ck-sounds at their best. Menace, Ado, Clouds, Nick Cambell, LeBreton and Bowski: this is turning into the absolute dream team. Enjoy these artists and support the label, because the only thing better than more of these releases would be a Blood Music tour.

Special!

Bowski – Balloon Brain: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Very special!

Bowski – White Russian: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Okay, screw it — they’re all special!

Bowski – Poppies: LISTEN TO IT HERE

In case you missed them: some other stellar tracks from the Blood Music crew.

Still addicted to it …

Ado – Voids: LISTEN TO IT HERE

One of the best openers to a set you’ll ever hear.

Menace – Hz And Tones (Original Mix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Up and down, around and around … from three minutes on, I’m drooling …

Clouds – Liquid (Original Mix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

The Clouds remix is tight — but this is even tighter. Check ‘em both!

Nick Cambell – Brick Scrap (Original Mix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Love this melody … dark and twisted blood music.

LeBreton – Ghoul: LISTEN TO IT HERE

The master. “Deep Red” and “Medieval” got more love, but this was a favourite the minute I heard it and still gets played every week. Can you blame me?

Fake Blood – Voices: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Thicker than Water……..xx

The Monday Mash

November 21st, 2011

Posted by Scott Willats

“Back to work” seems to be the phrase of the day so far. Without sounding like an absolute loser, I have a serious case of the Munnnnndays. But what can you do? Press play on a couple of these tracks, and maybe that will get us over the hump. Here we go.

Since Boys Noize is heading Toronto’s way in the next couple days, lets play one of his hottest tracks — flipped upside down by our own John Roman.

Lemonade (John Roman Remix) – Erol Alkan, Boys Noize: LISTEN TO IT HERE

A new track from The 2 Bears. Not the biggest fan of it yet, but it’s been growing on me since Friday.

The 2 Bears – Work: LISTEN TO IT HERE

This is a pretty sick song, and made for the masses. Pick it up before the rest of the world does.

Swedish House Mafia ft Knife Party – Antidote (Vocal Edit): LISTEN TO IT HERE

This track is almost too good to be true. Be perfectly honest with yourself: listening to the original is a guilty pleasure for all of us. Add an EDM twist, and this is what you get. I’ll be playing this in my car — with the windows up, of course.

No Body – The Thong Song (2011 Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

And, of course, something for the big room. Beautiful vocals have been added to this progressive monster. Sounds a little familiar, but Norman Doray’s combination of the vocals and instrumental seems effortless and natural.

Norman Doray, Tawiah – Breakaway (Original Mix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Something brand new from the techno villain known as Gesaffelstein. Hands down the release of the week, it’s everything you’ve come to expect from this artist. All that’s missing: a club that looks like Joker’s hideout in the old Adam West version of Batman. Granted and slanted!

Gesaffelstein – Control Movement: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Finally, the first video from one of my favourite artists on my favourite label. Blood Music’s Ado has an absolutely eye-grabbing, bizzaro video for his feature tune “The Ultra.” Check it out:

Halloween Special

October 28th, 2011

Posted by Scott Willats

It’s the week when guys dress in the most hideous or hilarious outfits they can find, while every woman resembles a porn star — and I couldn’t be happier. Halloween is a weekend that many of us cherish. Whether you’re the little kid who gets a night of candy and excitement, the high school and college kids making blurry mistakes at a Halloween kegger or the adult who appreciates the fun of a good night with friends, Halloween is always a joy. So let’s make it a little more fun!

I’ve compiled a playlist of some of the best electro-house tracks to play this weekend. Whether you’re playing at a party, hosting one or just messing with the kids that walk to your door, I’m sure this will fit in nice and perfect. So strap up and keep your children close because … alll work and no play make Johnny a dulllllll boy! REDRUM!

Felix Cartal does a great job of making an eerie melody, Clockwork picks it up and adds the zombies!

Felix Cartal – Skeleton (Clockwork Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Creepy and vicious … Ado gives you a taste of Blood Music with Voids

Ado – Voids: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Not the scariest melody, but dark and deranged!

Gesaffelstein – Glass: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Like I wasn’t gonna get him up here. The master of the dark melody: even for Fake Blood, this one is a little murderous. Makes you feel like the prey being hunted.

Fake Blood – Voices: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Michael Myers on dubstep? Get me out of here! From the king of horrocore, Figure!

Figure – Michael Myers is Dead (Original Mix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Having gone to school in Ottawa, I know how they get on Devil’s Night out there. Ottawa’s finest lend a vintage sound to the evening.

Boy 8-Bit – Wolfen (Jokers Of The Scene Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

And a couple videos to top it all off. First up, from the French Jack Ripper, Gesaffelstein, who shows you what Tour de France you do not want to be a part of (or maybe you do).

Gesaffelstein — Viol: WATCH IT HERE

Meanwhile, Designer Drugs practically party in a graveyard. From 1:55 on I feel like I’m watching a Kubrick flick. Love it!

Designer Drugs – Drop Down: WATCH IT HERE

 Have a Happy Halloween…………xx
