Sweets of the Week – April 5

April 5th, 2012

First and foremost a Happy Good Friday and Easter Sunday to all of bpm nation. Amidst all your ragin’ this long weekend, try to take a few minutes to remember the meaning of the holiday.

Thursday is one of the biggest nights in the club world. Even the people who don’t enjoy clubbing — because of the crowds, because of the price it exacts on your wallet and your body — will be out and about tonight. I think it’s a great time to hit a club that has a resident DJ and see what he or she is playing. Are they sticking with the tried-and-true crowd-pleasers, or pushing the boundaries with some creative new sounds? All questions worth answering, while indulging in a few drinks and the occasional taste of eye candy.

With Coachella coming up, next week’s Sweets will be dedicated to that infamous festival, which showcases some of the best acts in the world in a three-day clusterf**k. Meantime, this week’s helping should hold you all the way to 4/20, when we will get high together. Figuratively speaking, of course ;-) .

So Christmas and New Year’s have come and gone, leaving the inevitable post-holiday sense of letdown in their wake. To lift the spirits a little, here’s a look back at the Sweets of the Week anthems that made 2011 memorable.

A haunted weekend has passed, full of horror films starring B-list actors and lots and lots of fake blood. Just as many Halloween parties featuring club smoke, gummy worms and a battle for the best costumes. A lot of good concerts as well, especially in the Toronto area, as both Annie Mac and Madeon entertained crowds thanks to Embrace Presents.

Halloween is always a weekend crowded with events. Sometimes you just don’t have enough time and you’re forced to miss an event you were dying to see. Every time Annie Mac in town, you can pretty much guarantee that I’m there. It was not to be this year, and I’m still upset about that. All the same, I got to attend a lot of events and heard an awesome selection of new songs. Here are some of the bigger ones I came across.

The first is a nice little remix of Tiësto’s “Maximal Crazy” by Bassjackers. They’ve been absolutely killing it of late, and this is no different.

Tiësto – Maximal Crazy (Bassjackers Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Kylee Swenson’s vocals are heaven-sent in this track remixed by Kids at the Bar. Enjoy!

Dan Sena – Song Of Siren Ft. Del The Funky Homosapien & Kylee Swenson (Kids At The Bar Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

A new one just in time for Call of Duty: MW3. Put on your gas masks and play this at 1 a.m. when you go online to snipe the Spetsnaz.

F.O.O.L – The Beginning (Original Mix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

And a little mainstream feel for you right now. I’m a huge fan of DJ Kue’s remixes (Lady Gaga‘s “Monster” and B.O.B.’s “Beast Mode” being among those that stand out). Now the four-eyed spinner is back with another batch — again taking on popular songs. Have a listen if you like — if not, no harm no foul. Very urban influenced here.

Nicki Minaj ft. Rihanna and Metafisix- Fly (It’s The DJ Kue Remix!): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Nicki Minaj feat. Drake – Moment 4 Life (DJ Kue Remix) – Dirty: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Brooklyn is my new favourite borough in New York and Savoy reps the BK just right.

Savoy – California Dreamin: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Deadmau5 this week……………..xx

Sweets of the Week

Round one of this week’s concert series came to an end last night, with Wolfgang Gartner going innnnn. Tonight, New York producer Luca Venezia, a.k.a. Drop The Lime, will be making a quick stop at The Mod Club to show off some of his new stuff. This man is talent in the purest form, and if you’re in the mood for a lot of jumping around and beats that hit you with precision and accuracy, The Mod Club is your spot tonight. Yet another beauty brought to you by Embrace Presents!

Boy-8-Bit – Suspense is Killing Me (Drop The Lime Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Since I don’t think I’ll be able to get a post up in time tomorrow, I should talk a little about the raveaggedon that is on tap at Kool Haus. The four-eyed assassin, Skrillex, is coming to town with a very special guest: 12th Planet! This show is for the all-ages type of crowd. Everyone is invited and everyone should come out to really appreciate what Skrillex has accomplished. I think this makes his fourth trip to Toronto in the past year, so it seems pretty obvious that we’ve become a favourite in his eyes.

12th Planet, meanwhile, is the artist I am truly excited to see tomorrow. Not only is this the first time I get to see him live, I will also be doing a web exclusive interview with him as well. So if you’ve got any questions for me to shoot his way, feel free to leave them in the comments.

Skrillex – All I Ask of you (12th Planet Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Which leads me to my sweets. I’m gonna keep them simple this week because I suspect most have you have already clicked off the page to get your tickets. And can I blame you? Not in the slightest.

First one is for all the Ferry Corsten fans out there. A lot of my posts have the dubstep feel, so it’ll be refreshing to hear some big room form. Bassjackers, who are in another zone of late, have absolutely worked their magic on Ferry’s track. It’s heavy and exactly what you want to hear 30 minutes into your fav DJ’s set. This one can’t be listened to sitting down.

Ferry Corsten – Check It Out (Bassjackers Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Steve Aoki and Weezer … this is too good to be true. Genre breakers!

Steve Aoki – Earthquakey People feat. Rivers Cuomo (The Sequel): LISTEN TO IT HERE

And of course, the mandatory new Justice track. Though I must say, this one is top quality. I think it’s so far my fav of the tracks I’ve heard. Smooth feel.

Justice – Newlands: LISTEN TO IT HERE

A lot for a little and a little for a lot………………..xx
