That’s Sick

Lately we’ve been hearing a lot of buzz about Canadian artist Datsik and his debut album on Steve Aoki‘s powerhouse label Dim Mak. Now, those of us who live and breathe bass go to sleep at night grinding our teeth at the thought that Datsik isn’t already crazy famous. Sad to say, there are lost souls out there who don’t eat bass for breakfast — and it takes a special kind of sound to get these folks sitting up and really taking notice of bass.

Datsik has that sound.

This B.C. native has been ripping up dancefloors for a while now with his patented mixture of glitch, synth and bass, and his followers now are growing in number. For the past three months, I’ve been raving like a madman about “Lightspeed,” his collaboration with Kill the Noise. At an astonishing 128 bpm, it’s the absolute Platonic ideal of a bass track.

And then there’s “Fully Blown,” his track with Snak the Ripper. It’s got a sound that is recognizably Canadian: grimy in every sense of the word, and blending rap and bass with a facility matched only by fellow Canucks Zeds Dead.

While “Fully Blown” is very slightly dated, there’s a great reason to be checking it out now: the ever-innovative minds at Dim Mak recently ran a contest to see who could come up with the best remix of the track. These are some of the top dogs:

Sweets of the Week – Saturday Edition

December 17th, 2011

Chris Lake last night at Maison Mercer,  Zeds Dead tonight at Kool Haus. I think this weekend is taken care of quite nicely.

However, there’s one event that needs to be highlighted specially. Tonight, Wrongbar plays host to the third annual Producing For Presents EP release party. This event is the reason the Faceless management team, Embrace Presents and all these Toronto artists are the cream of the crop in class and talent. For three years, some of the best local DJs have been hitting the studio to create some gems on behalf of the less fortunate. It will be a warm atmosphere with some rich tuneage. John Roman, Poupon, Gold ‘n’ Grams, Prince Club and Meech will all be out, so be sure to pop in and check the event. An automatic place on Santa’s Nice list for those who attend.

CLICK HERE to hear/read more about the event! At least come out for the eggnog!

On to the Sweets….

My Favourite track off the PFP3 EP, VLSONN keeps it slanted and crisp with DX707 … boogie!

Vlsonn – dx707: LISTEN TO IT HERE

SOFI has a cult-like following. In some camps she’s a prodigy and the scond coming. In some other camps she’s not so well known. I feel she has what it takes to go to the next level — and songs like this are helping.

Noisia, Sofi – Again Sometime (Extended Mix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

bpm Nation loves them some Tiësto. So this will be the biggest track to grab this week, as he takes on a classic. This tune will self destruct in five seconds!

Mission Impossible Theme (Tiësto Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Gigamesh has just given you your New Year’s Eve anthem. Thank him later.

Gigamesh – Burnin: LISTEN TO IT HERE

A mini-mix second to none. Gain on Top have absolutely created a beast and deserve top prize on chemicaljump.com.

Gain on Top – “Gimme Five” Minimix: LISTEN TO IT HERE

If you know me then you know I love Kris Menace. Whether it’s him, BlackVan or his newest creation Stars on 33, the Menace man gets it done. With a litttle help from Lawrence Tompson and Radical Peterson this is “Keep on Dancing”!

Visual Candy

The visuals are available for Brodinski‘s smash “Let The Beat Control Your Body.” The teaser to the release of the Bromance EP makes producing bangers with Gesaffelstein look so effortless. It’s incredible to think how big this song could end up being.

Jonas Rathsman‘s “Tobago” has been a song that I play once a day. It lifts your spirit in a subtle way without you really knowing. He shot a perfect video to match the song: laid back on the islands. Classic.

If it ain’t broke … “Loca People” was everyone’s guilty pleasure it came out. Well, we’re back for round two, as audio porn meets meets visual guilt. Yeah, I watched it twice. OK, three times.

And that’s your sweets for this week. See you guys at the shows……………………….xx

Sweets of the Week

November 18th, 2011

Hola amigos! Happy Friday to all! I had a Thomas Edison moment the other day and thought I would share: I think it’s time to have a contest for all the independent DJs out there. I want to hear your mixes! Nothing is official yet, just thinking outside the box here, but I think it should be 10-minute mixes with whatever tune selections you choose, the best mix to be showcased on our site and posted throughout our social media networks. Again nothing’s written in stone yet, but it’s something for all you bedroom producers and DJs to think about. Let me know what you think — hit me up at @Sawstruck or on the bpm:tv Facebook page.

Excited? Good, because I have some sweets here that are definitely mix-worthy. Let’s get to it!

SWEETS

One of Sweden’s Rookies of the Year is back with a remix, and it’s exactly what you would expect: a big progressive sound made for stadiums. I swear, all the Swedish artists need to get together and do a joint tour. (And I need to copyright that idea.)

Titanium (Alesso Remix) PREVIEW: LISTEN TO IT HERE

A week after I posted about his 52-songs-in-52-weeks challenge, ZHU releases an absolute beast of a remix for week 9. This time the West Coast electro whiz kid takes on a Canadian household name, and gives Lights‘ new track “Toes” a progressive trance feel. The result will be playing from The Hoxton to The Guvernment in no time.

Lights – Toes (ZHU Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Bart B More is more than just an up-and-coming DJ nowadays. The kid is official. Mr. Bart Van der Meer’s remix of Cubic Zirconia is the evolution of an anthem. Keeps it fresh and funky at the beginning to ease us in, only to take us to the absolute height of aggression at 2:00. A must-have.

FREE, FREE, FREE! Did I get your attention? Remember Caesars‘ almost cult classic track “Jerk It Out”? A couple years back you couldn’t watch five minutes of commercials without hearing this track. Well it’s reared its ugly head again — but this time its face is filthy. Sawgood has decided to add a few kicks and drums — plus a s**tload of attitude — to spice it up a bit. This track is so sexy you’ll be happy to jerk it out all over the dance floor. What am I talking about?

Caesars – Jerk It Out (Sawgood Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

One thing I love is hearing an artist take on a song that’s in a completely different lane. I love seeing how the producer makes up for those pieces in the track that need to be changed. This one is a must-hear.  I suggest you listen to Two Door Cinema Club’s original, and then check Feed Me’s version right after. Spectacular!

Two Door Cinema Club – What You Know (Feed Me Cover Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

I’m a little tardy on this one, but it is without a doubt my track of the week. Le Castle Vania has been releasing some of the heaviest remixes over the past year, while staying pretty low-key. This is going to change all that. I’ve been in love with Kaskade‘s “Turn it Down” from the minute I heard it — that is, until I heard this. The ATLien takes what already is an arena anthem and turns it into the ultimate banger. Simply put, THIS IS HUGE! Check the footage of him dropping it at Escape from Wonderland. The audio is a little dodgy so be sure to cop the tune in all its 320 glory. Buy it!

BONUS SWEET!

Have a good weekend! Boys Noize next week. It’s going downnnnnnnnnn……………………….xx
