Album Review: The Rules of Dada

October 29th, 2012

Posted by Gosia Mrugala

“Destroy dance music and have fun. Don’t look back in the past. Always go forward. Don’t think too much. Always follow the money. Do the Dada.”

Eccentric Swedish electro house duo Dada Life (a.k.a. Olle Corneer and Stefan Engblom) have quite the philosophy. Posted to Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #THERULESOFDADA, these maxims to live by include:

* Never bring your brain to a rave.

* Doing the “airpiano” on stage while looking up in the air? Never. The “heart sign” with both your hands? F**K NO.

* Tickle-punch-tickle-combo. Happy Violence!

* Cheating is winning.

* If you’re stuck, there’s only one solution: go harder.

* If you only need one word to describe a song in the studio…then it’s done!

* No bananas on the rider? Then we do our two hour deep/tech house set. Everything under 118 BPM.

* PLUR = Potassium Lust Unity Rage

* Arriving beautiful – leaving ugly.

* Beautiful music = boring music. At least today.

* Never BBQ before a gig.

* If you don’t want to get wet, you don’t want to have fun.

* Bass don’t cry.

* Changing underwear at the club is cheating. Even for the members of Dada Life.

* Never bring your brain into the club.

* Art should be loud as fuck.

* Always kick out the epic motherfucker. Always.

Their new album The Rules of Dada, released October 22 on their label So Much Dada is pretty much the illustrated guide to this philosophy. So let’s break it down, shall we?

1. “Kick Out The Epic Motherfu**er” – I first heard this track during the summer at The Guvernment, and was just blown away. It sent my body into an absolute frenzy — and everyone on the dancefloor was right there with me. Definitely a club banger. The video is pretty entertaining, too. It gives you a good idea of just how crazy and random these guys are. There’s lots of champagne, lots of bananas (get your mind our of the gutter, now) and some HARD PARTYING. And bananas.

2. “Feed The Dada” – I’d call this the anthem of the Dada Life philosophy. The lyrics are intriguing, the music video frankly jaw-dropping. If you want to know why the Dada movement is destined to continue growing, this is the pick to click. Feed the Dada.

3. “Arrive Beautiful Leave Ugly” – Gotta admit, I’ve had this track on repeat. Quite the title: I’d describe the image it conjures in my mind, but not while there are children or pets around. (Gotta bite my tongue sometimes.) I can see this one moving the floor, for sure.

4. “So Young So High” – Well, they can’t all be epic. Not a huge fan of this track: can’t see it filling the floor at the club, though it might move the less-demanding fans at an outdoor festival. With repeat plays it started to grow on me a little bit, but it won’t be making the personal playlist any time soon.

5. “You Will Do What We Will Do” – A 129-bpm electro house banger that held me from first note to last beat and left me yearning for more. Surprising, too: I was expecting a hard electro drop at the 0:29 mark, and instead got a pause and then another mellow build-up. Tricky! Definitely one of the tracks I favour from this album.

6. “Happy Violence” – I remember hearing this track for the first time while watching a Burning Man recap video: appropriate! All it took was the first 10 seconds, and I knew I was hooked. Another great track title, too — puzzling and inriguing, like all of their titles.

7. “Rolling Stones T-Shirt” – Entertaining tune. And that music video! Pretty typical stuff: girls in bikinis, pool parties, the beach … until the 2:18. I made the mistake of drinking some water while watching this, and almost choked! Couldn’t stop laughing. I won’t try describe it — just watch for yourself. All I will say is this: you see a whole new side to the boys from Dada Life here.

8. “Bass Don’t Cry” – Give me bass and I’ll give you my heart. It’s as simple as that. I’m a bass addict. A bassaholic. This track strikes the kind of perfect balance between bass and rhythm that will set a musical orgy in motion on any dancefloor.

9. “Everything Is Free” – Without the vocals I am a fan of this one, but The vocals at the start of this track almost deterred me from listening to the rest. Which is too bad: vocals aside, I’m a fan of this one. Not the best track on the album, but hardly the worst either.

10. “Boing Clash Boom” – See “Everything Is Free.” Actually, I’m not sure if it’s the vocals that ruin this one for me, or something else. Frankly, the track is a bit all over the place. If I had to sum it up in one word, that word would be: confusion.

11. “Don’t Stop” – After the last couple of tracks, they had me doubting — but album finishes strong. A bit mellow, but with enough kick to move the listener, and vocals that mesh comfortably with the beat. Do the Dada!

Sweets of the Week – July 6

July 6th, 2012

Posted by Scott Willats

Middle of July, festival season in flight, hotter than a muthafucka ….

Wait a sec: remember all those long, cold winter nights when we bundled ourselves in parkas, scarves and long johns, enduring the bitter chill so we could get to the club to see our favorite DJ rage? I certainly remember, and I’m sure you do too. So I find it hard to complain about this stifling heat we’re all suffering through. As we all know, it could. Be. Much. Much. Worse.

But yeah, it is hotter than a muthafucka.

One other thing about summer that kinda sorta blows: since most major artists are busy touring so much, new material can be lacking. Now, sometimes that’s a good thing, giving you the chance to get reacquainted with old favorites. But for a new music junkie like me, it feels like drought season. But that just means I’ve gotta search harder and longer to find something fresh for you. Plus the Calgary Stampede starts today, and I can’t leave my cowboys hanging without some new electro. Lez get it!

Oh, and did I mention it’s hotter than a muthafucka?

THE SWEETS

We start with two vastly different but equally awesome remixes of Dada Life‘s “Kick Out The Epic Motherfucker.” Which one do youuuuu like?

Dada Life – Kick Out The Epic Motherfucker (Otto Knows Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Dada Life – Kick Out The Epic Motherfucker (Datsik Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Wolfgang Gartner is bizzack — this time with a preview of his new EP. People have been saying that Gartner’s work lately has been lacking. I think that’s a testament to high how he has set the bar. While I wouldn’t put it quite so harshly, I’ll concede that I haven’t heard the old Gartner for awhile. That ended today.

Wolfgang Gartner – Casual Encounters Of The 3rd Kind EP: LISTEN TO THE PREVIEW

One-half of The Krays, Yuksek, is back with a new EP and it’s packed with killer remixes. Anything new from Aeroplane will always get my attention

Yuksek – The Edge EP: LISTEN TO THE PREVIEW

Here’s something a little different: Skrillex versus drum-and-bass. Some will love, some will hate. Either way,, this will evoke some kind of emotion from you.

Skrillex – DnB Ting: LISTEN TO IT HERE

This one, on the other hand, I know you’ll love. Whether you’ll admit it to anyone is another question.

Far East Movement – Dirty Bass (Jump Smokers Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Le Youth is on fire. The way he uses his samples, you can tell he knows his way around a DAW. Keep him on your radar

Le Youth – Memories: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Waka Flocka? Rooster in my Rari? What the hell am I talking about? Fans will know. People who don’t: trust me, you’re not missing much. But Clinton Sparks does make this pump. Worth a try.

The Cataracs feat. Waka Flocka – All You (Clinton Sparks Awesome Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Viceroy is an acquired taste. At first: not so much. Now: addicted.

Viceroy – Chase Us Around feat. Madi Diaz: LISTEN TO IT HERE

BANGER!!!! Basically five minutes of pure bass. I’ll take it.

Bart B More & Harvard Bass – Listen To This (D.I.M.’s Unreleased Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Hmmm. I’ve liked every Sound Remedy track I’ve ever heard. Ever. But this one lacks … something. Still, he’s earned his stripes, so I’ll let it slide. Consider it recommended on the strength of his past work.

Imogen Heap – Hide And Seek (Sound Remedy Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

You know I love me some swing. Here’s a track that will spice up your party asap.

Minimatic- Practise Your Swing EP: LISTEN TO THE PREVIEW

Riva Starr, where have you been all my life? The elegant return of a true master. Look out for Canadian tour dates soon!

Riva Starr & Ramon Tapia – Freedom (Original Mix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

VISUAL SWEET

Excited about the upcoming IDENTITY Festival? This video should get you properly amped. If not, two words: Eric. Prydz. (Btw, if you want to win tickets to IDENTITY, mosey on over to our FB page, as in now-ish,)

Enjoy le weekend, knuckleheadz!

Cazzette Wit’ Attitude

June 13th, 2012

Posted by Scott Willats

While I finish putting the final touches on my latest mini mix (due out the end of this week), I thought I should share a track I heard yesterday. I was seriously thinking about scrapping my mix so I could add this beast — but instead I figured I would throw it into a post and let you have it asap.

Sweden’s Cazzette, who recently dropped an absolute bomb of a track with their remix of Dada Life’s “Rolling Stones T-Shirt,” are back again — this time with a remix of a rap classic. The duo, currently touring with none other than Avicii, take N.W.A’s “Straight Outta Compton” and turn it into a full-on 2012 club anthem. Though they add a heavy coating of EDM gloss, you can still hear the grit and grime from Ice Cube, Ren, Yella, Dre and, of course, Eazy.

This track is the perfect illustration of how and why our genre has come to run the show: every day it seems like you wake up to find that some DJ has taken another song you already loved and found a way to make it completely current. Looking forward to seeing Cazzette live this summer.

Btw, a bonus for Dexter fans: Cazzette’s their remix the show’s opening title music, “The Blood Theme.” I love this track!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Hate that it’s only a preview. More, please.)

Cazzette vs NWA – Straight Outta Compton (Cazzette’s Ass Sniffin’ Hounds Bootleg): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Sweets of the Week – Victoria Day Edition

May 18th, 2012

Posted by Scott Willats

A week ain’t a week unless it’s sweet. With the sun a-shining, the last thing you want to do is spend a couple of hours in front of your laptop searching for new tunez. That’s what I’m here for! (You’re welcome.) I got you covered: sit back, press play, and enjoy the soundz of summer. bpm:tv presents … your May Two-Four Sweets of the Week!

I admit it: Justin Bieber‘s “Boyfriend” is one of those songs I find myself humming in the shower or singing along with in the car. At this point, some readers of this blog have already closed their browsers and moved on. For those of you who decided to give me the benefit of a doubt and stick around: the Swedish duo Dada Life has taken the original and turned it on its head, making it over into something you can sing aloud freely with your windows wide open. Once you’ve heard this, the original becomes obsolete.

Justin Bieber – Boyfriend (Dada Life Remix) Radio Edit: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Heavy, Heavy, HEAVY! Sound Remedy is out of this world right now. This time they take on a personal favourite in Lisa Mitchell‘s “Neopolitan Dreams” and … ahhh, screw it: just press play!

Lisa Mitchell – Neopolitan Dreams (Sound Remedy Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

When I went to Webster Hall in New York to see Annie Mac, Savoy was the opening act. Now, it can’t be easy to open for a DJ whose set features all the most in-demand tracks. It leaves you with the leftovers. Happily for Savoy (and for the audience that night), “leftovers” meant their own originals. Since then, whenever I hear the name Savoy I sit up and pay attention. This time around they link up with Heather Bright, throwing in a little dubby-wubby to get you scooting over to Beatport to cop this tune.

SAVOY & Heather Bright – We Are The Sun (Original Mix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

You know that moment when you walk into club in the middle of summer, and everyone is already screaming and sweating? That moment when your heart starts beating faster and a grin steals uncontrollably across your face? Usually in that moment it’s a DJ Dan track playing in the background. The legend is back, with a new tune that will put you right back in that moment.

DJ Dan – Reckless Gurl (Lo-fi Preview): LISTEN TO IT HERE

AudioPorn Records gives us a preview of a new EP from Xilent. It’s heavily produced, but not overdone. If you like Kill the Noize, you’ll want to pick this up. Take a good listen to all four tracks.

Xilent – Ultrafunk EP: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Last, since next week is Pryda week, I’m assigning some homework: listen closely to these classic tracks from the master. Whether as Cirez D, Eric Prydz or Pryda, one fact remains consistent: this dude puts in the work. Enjoy some faves, and feel free to suggest your own in the comments below!

“With Me”

“Viro”

“Not Going Home (Remix)” – I kept the rip ’cause it just sounds alive. Gotta love Pete dropping a world exclusive.

“On Off”

And if you missed it his new one … “Allein”

VISUAL SWEET

Bassnectar fans will love this one. His new album which we reviewed a few weeks back, is causing a stir with a wide cross-section of “good music” fans across the world. From heavy metal fans to ravers to jungle junkies, the response is the same: This sh*t is crazy. Here, he takes the Prodigy-like “Ugly” and adds appropriate visuals.

Sweets of the Week – May 4

May 4th, 2012

Posted by Scott Willats

It’s Friiiiiiiday — and not just any Friday. The bpm:tv Nation will be venturing into Knights territory to celebrate the premiere of Grand Benders at Cobra London.

The only downside is that I can’t be in two places at once, which means I’m going to have to miss Goldroom tonight at the Gladstone. This is a Pop Kult! event presented by Mansion, so you know the crowd will be knowledgeable, the drinks will be flowing and the music will be top-notch. If you find yourself in the dot this evening, head for Queen and Gladstone, homie.

I’m stoked for the trek to London. An hour’s drive means I need to get on my A-game and prep a road trip playlist with the freshest/flyest new beatz. And so, without further ado, your Sweets of the Week …

Start off with a brand new banger from the beatdown king. Aoki and Dimas go apeshit on this one.

Steve Aoki & Angger Dimas feat. Iggy Azalea – Beat Down: LISTEN TO IT HERE

I feel like I should be on the Blood Music payroll. I mean, any time I hear anything brand new from these guys, I’m all over it. Then again, I feel like I should be paying them for delivering such a steady supply of the baddest beats. So let’s maybe just call it even. Anyway, here’s a double dose: first with Ado, then LeBreton‘aaaaave it!

Ado – Home: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Jagerverb – Vega (Lebreton Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

If you can’t make the Pup Kult! event tonight, then download this asap: it’s the closest you can get to actually being there. Josh Legg is in the creative zone right now, so look out for a Goldroom feature on the blog next week.

Goldroom – Aviva Mix 2012: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Also very much hoping this track gets bumped at the Gladstone tonight. L.A. native Le Youth has a banger on his hands here. Oh, and it’s free. Copped!

Le Youth – Dance With Me: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Track has barely been released and already the remixes are pouring in. This one employs my favourite recipe: one cup Wolf plus two scoops Disco. Go in boyz.

Wolfgang Gartner- Redline (Disco Pharaoh Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

My progressive peeps: you know I always got you covered, right? Dyro & Rene Kuppens tackle you in full stride with this orgy of synth and bass sounds. Has the smell of summer all over it.

Dyro & Rene Kuppens – Raid: LISTEN TO IT HERE

For many of us, May will be known as “Pryda Month.” The Swedish God of House Music is set to unleash his three-CD compilation Eric Prydz Presents Pryda on May 21. 3 CD’s of Eric is about enough to fill your sets for the next year. Doubtless this mammoth album will get leaked soon enough. In the meantime, we’ll just have to settle for this anthem.

Finally, this. Far from new, I realize, but sometimes you gotta bring a track back — backtrack, you dig? Jacques Lu Cont has been quietly making a return to glory of late. But it’s his take on a house classic that remains top of my iPod playlist. Hope this brings you back. U know i love you better …

Juliet – Avalon (Jacques Lu Cont Versus Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

VISUAL SWEETS

Dada Life take the typical house video and put a spin on it. Careful, fellas — watch the whole thing before you comment.

It’s no secret that I have a serious Kris Menace obsession. This track is made for clubs, movie soundtracks and bus rides alike. Only Menace can pull that off.

Can’t just play one Menace. I mean, are you kidding me?

Metronomy – Heartbreaker (Kris Menace Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

And that’s it for the week. Just a reminder, bpm:tv Nation is gonna be in London tonight — and trust me when I say “It’s going down.” We’ll be celebrating the launch of bpm:tv’s newest series, so come on out and meet the stars of Grand Benders. Lehhh go!

Sweets of the Week – January 20

January 20th, 2012

Posted by Scott Willats

Clockwise from top left: Dada Life, Jokers of the Scene, Gesaffelstein, Brodinski

The slow weekends are over and it’s time to hit the concert scene running. Some heavy shows going down. First up: Dada Life was in Toronto last night, and the Swedish duo put the Hoxton to the test. Next in line: Jokers of the Scene tonight at Wrongbar. The Ottawa duo always puts on a show you want to catch, managing to lay down some grimey-Trent-Reznor-soundtracky-dark-tunez, but still keeping the party hot and the audience on their toes. If you’re in the Toronto area and aren’t familiar wit the Jokers, I really suggest you stop by and check out what two of this country’s most underrated producers are up to. Check in at Embrace Presents to cop an early-bird ticket.

In honour of the monster truck show going down at the Rogers Centre this weekend, I will now point my attention to the main event – Saturday Saturday , SATURDAY!!! (in a booming monster truck show voice). Tomorrow we get to see two of the hottest artists in EDM … scratch that: two of the hottest artists in music. Industry favourite Brodinski is in town to kill the Wrongbar and turn that sum-a-bitch sidewayz, ya dig? This time he brings with him an artist I’ve been going on about nonstop for the past year: Gesaffelstein. Don’t let the German-sounding name fool you, this guy is French techno at its purest. You like Justice? you like Ed Banger Records? you like black leather, dark hair and claps and kicks that rattle your veins and turn your face pale? Wrongbar Saturday. You’re welcome!

SWEETS

First, let’s hear some bangers from the the above mentioned. Dada Life must of been two of the loudest kids on the block growing up. Nothing is soft with them, and that’s why we like them.

Mustard Pimp – ZHM (Dada Life Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Brand new EP from Jokers of the Scene, and the JOTS have some seriously emotional tracks on this. Big! If you like, check out also We Plants Are Happy Plants.

Jokers of the Scene – J0T5: LISTEN TO IT HERE

As if you don’t already have these….

Gesaffelstein – Control Movement (Preview): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Brodinski feat. Louisahhh! – Let The Beat Control Your Body (Preview): LISTEN TO IT HERE

PROPER SWEETS

A fresh new EP just dropped by this man can only be summed up one way: it bangs! Some serious tunez on this joint. If you’re thinking 12th Planet is just another one of those Skrillex clones, you are dead wrong. This kid has an ear for what’s next, not what’s now, and this EP could spell the beginning of Skrillex opening shows for him. All right, I’ll calm it down — but you get the point: cop this!!!

Antiserum & 12th Planet – Ghost: LISTEN TO IT HERE

http://soundcloud.com/antiserum/ghost-w-12th-planet

12th Planet, Skrillex & Kill The Noise – Burst: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Finalllllllly! A remix to this track that you can actually hang your hat on. This track is genre-less. You could rap on it, sing on it, speed it up to hardstyle, slow it down to whine to, and on and on. A little bit of everything, which is what we love. Good looking Flosstradamus!

Major Lazer – Original Don (Flosstradamus Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Want to piss off your parents in a hurry? Easy — take Sawgood‘s newest release, lock yourself in the room right next to your folks, and BUUUUUUUUMP THIS! This track has your energy levels covered from every angle. Heavy bass, an up-tempo anticipation and a higher-tempo climax! Everybody just clap your hands!!!!!!!!!!! Even a little DnB thrown in for you creatures!

Sawgood Ft Indosilver Club Vs Skrillex – One Handed: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Brazil’s finest! This is an immediate add. Look out for a special South American post coming very very soon!

Afrojack & R3hab – Prutataaa (Darth & Vader Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Attention, attention! This is a new track from Adventure Club – it’s not a remix and it sounds fantastic. (Boys: with tunez like this, when’s the EP dropping!!!!?!?!?) And the best part? it’s free! I love these Montrealers. (But go Leafs!)

Adventure Club – Do I See Color: LISTEN TO IT HERE

VISUAL SWEET

Brand new video from Rusko. I like — what do you think?

And that’s it for this week, amigos. A review of Steve Aoki‘s new album next week, along with more of the goodies you’ve come to expect!

Catching Up: New Year’s Sweets

January 3rd, 2012

Posted by Scott Willats

No question: Zeds Dead made this holiday season their own. After a more than impressive Toronto show at Kool Haus (which bpm:tv captured for an upcoming Spotlight), DC and Hooks decided to give the perfect encore at Wrongbar. By 9pm the lineup was already down the block.

This party used to be in a basement — now it’s sold out for days, the hardest ticket to get in the biggest city in Canada. Success! I won’t even get into the logistics of the show. Lemme just say, calmy: they did very well.

The best thing about catching one of these Bassmentality events is to see the guys in their element. I remember at a Designer Drugs show earlier this year there was a moment of chaos when things got a little out of hand and crowd started to bum rush the stage. After a minute of silence and calming everyone down, they started their set again. Not Zeds Dead, not The Killabits, not Bassmentality. When the crowd went h.a.m. they went meatloaf. You wanna knock my Pioneers? No prob bruv, we gonna wobble the f*** out of u.

Got some sweets for you right here. Not all brand new tracks — just the stuff that rocked my personal holidays.

Biz and Sam were in the giving mood this Yuletide. Here is an electro version of Kill the Noise – Dying. First release off their 8 Crazy Nights.

Kill The Noise Ft. Emily Hudson – Dying (The Killabits Electro Edit): LISTEN AND DOWNLOAD HERE

This is an old one — but it was new to me this week and is on repeat heavily. Look out for Fytch!

Nina Simone – Feeling Good (Fytch Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

I recently posted on twitter (@Sawstruck) that this track is the tune of the moment. Benga takes A-Trak‘s latest and makes it his….

Stingray – Benga Remix: LISTEN TO IT HERE

If this track wasn’t on your New Year’s Eve playlist, then you weren’t doing New Year’s right.

Disco Slut (Asco Remix) – The Sleepover, Reece Low & Meltek Feat. J.Net: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Another oldie but essential … lap it up!

Mustard Pimp – ZHM (Dada Life Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

This’ll go down nicely with that leftover turkey and eggnog.

Matt & Kim – Cameras (Gucci Vump Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Let’s take a trip to Disney’s Tron soundtrack and venture a tune from the three rudest dudes in the game.

Daft Punk – Derezzed (The Glitch Mob Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

North America’s Resident DJ

December 6th, 2011

Posted by Scott Willats

Last week I received Fire & Ice, the brand new double disc from bpm:tv favourite Kaskade. I know I did a quick little post when the CD was leaked, but I thought we owed it to Kaskade to give him a thorough review — after all, when he released Dynasty we were guests of honour at his party in Miami. So I took the CD, uploaded it to my PC, and sat down to give the entire double disc a listen in one sitting. Now, for someone who has severe ADD like I do, it’s hard sometimes to just listen to a full track before wanted to change it to hear another that would be good to mix it with. And to be honest, my immediate thought was: Kaskade is known for a great progressive sound, but sometimes his tracks can linger a little too long. How can I sit through it all? But it was a lot easier than expected — and now I look forward to sharing it with you.

Here’s a simple breakdown of what this album is all about: you get Kaskade’s beats, but you also get a s**t-load of features and collabs. These latter tracks all seem to reflect a strong chemistry with the featured artists, furtheringthe impression that said artists have done some tinkering of their own with the songs. Most of the time this is for the best, so it’s nothing to worry about.

The kicker is the second disc — the Ice version — which features Kaskade’s own remixes of all 10 tracks from the first disc. So if you’re listening to disc one (Fire) and you’re worried that the album isn’t sounding much like Kaskade … relax: there’s a whole other CD devoted to his distinctive touch.

Overall, this album finds Kaskade at his peak. He seems perfectly comfortable with where he is right now as an artist. Known worldwide and finally establishing a sound that he can call his own, Kaskade was clearly in top form during making of this album — and if you like what he’s done before, I have a strong feeling you’re going to like this.

Fire

Eyes – ft Mindy Gledhill: This track is that perfect opener — and with all the remixes we’re hearing now, it’s obvious that EDM fans have really embraced the song. It grows into something you knew it was always going to be. This intro lets you know what the album is going to be like, and it lives up to the hype. Mindy’s vocals on it are absolutely priceless as well. A perfect start.

Turn It Down w/Rebecca & Fiona: The perfect template of how you make a hit. The minute this song was released, I knew it was going to be the flagship track. This is the relaxed version to say the least — but it still has a great energy. “I hold my breath when I hear lies.” The lyrics give you more of an idea of what you’re going to hear throughout the album.

Lessons in Love ft. Neon Trees: Tyler Glenn is becoming a great musician, and his vocals on this track reinforce that fact. This is one of those “stand up for your rights” songs in terms of the heavy beat and dramatic chords to go along with Tyler’s emotion in the lyrics. It may be a little too poppy and predictable — but that’s why disc two is there, right?

Lick it w/Skrillex: Well, well, well … look who made the cut. Skrillex has had the most amazing year of any artist I’ve ever seen. If Deadmau5 became famous overnight, Skrillex has become famous during breakfast. The combination of the two artists really works well here — and not in the way you’re probably thinking. Sure, it has a dubstep feel and the wobbles to match, but it really sounds like Kaskade gave Skrillex a perfect template to play with and Skrillex chose to respect the track and keep simple. And with Kaskade, simple works!

Love – ft. Haley: Bam! These two are like Bonnie and Clyde together. The track starts off with a deep cutoff filter decreasing quickly, with dramatic chords bumping in the background until you hear Haley’s voice arise. To be honest, I don’t think she actually has such a great voice. But when it’s on a Kaskade track it just sounds a lot better … no, wait: a ton better. The chords and tempo seem to fit her breathy sound. And one thing she has on this song is incredible emotion. It’s a track that could be alllllllll over dancefloors in the next eight months. Expect to hear it sooooon! “Hey hey you you, one more time will get us through, turn the clock so we don’t see …” Beauty!

Let Me Go – ft. Marcus Bentley: This is my type of track.  Imagine a long train ride, just staring out the window lost in thought.  This is your background music.  Maybe this sounds a little “can I borrow a feeling” to you — but that’s the type of vibe this track is made for.  A thinker song.  Not that the lyrics necessarily have anything to do with that; Marcus Bentley paints a sick story that is better to be interpreted by the individual listener. The sounds aren’t too heavy, but they aren’t exactly calm either.  A ton of build-ups in this song, with one killer payoff around 3:30.

Waste Love w/Quadron: Diversity is the beauty of our world.  Quadron has a very indie poet vibe, and she wouldn’t fit into a typical progressive house track … or would she?  Well, she did — and with bliss. Kaskade’s production brilliance is in full evidence on this one. He has created a somewhat jazzy house track that can still be bumped at your favourite club without slowing down the down too much.

Ice w/Dada Life and Dan Black: Simply put, my fav track on the album.  It has everything you could love. Dan Black is a genius that we here at bpm:tv have been talking about forever, it seems. Dada Life is one of the biggest names in EDM today, and Kaskade seems the perfect mediator to bring them together in creating an anthem. I talked it up when I first heard the leak, and I stick to my story.  This is your track!

How Long w/Inpetto & Late Night Alumni: The vocals on this track are second to none.  Dark, warm and sexy.  However, in my opinion it’s a little too “penthouse-suite-early-40s-Disaronno-on-the-rocks-drinking sounds.” Just my opinion.  I’m not quite ready to embrace this type of track; however, for many of you mature, grown and sexy folks, this song might get you pregnant!

Room for Happiness – ft. Skylar Grey: Wow, this music.  The combination of Skylar and Kaskade gives it a very soundtracky sound — but with such emotion. I’m not much for interpretive dance, but this song screams for it. And to give the songs its full merit, I would gladly sit through the whole performance and give it my undivided attention.  One thing that needs to be said about this album, by the way, is that the lyrics on most songs are incredible.  That’s rare to find in an EDM album. “Don’t be fooled by your emptiness.”

This album, in my opinion, is one of the best EDM releases of the past 10 years, showcasing the insane diversity that our artists have achieved.  Sure, he could have dropped another strictly progressive house CD and it would have sold just as much and been just as popular — but Kaskade did something I admire in my favourite producers: he challenged himself to be a great musician, and did so to great success. The man is already one of the biggest names in our genre, and still he wants to be better. That’s inspiring to producers, DJs and fans alike.  He didn’t need to throw in the Ice disc, but he wanted to.  He wanted to play around with more of his ideas, and give us more material to work with in the bargain. For that, I thank him!

It’s the refusal to accept complacency that defines extraordinary people in any field, and Kaskade is the perfect example.  Verdict:  Buy the album!
