Sweets of the Week – Coachella Edition

April 13th, 2012

Posted by Scott Willats

It’s no secret that Coachella, which kicks off today, is the festival all the “cool kids” swarm to. Maybe it’s the fact that no media are admitted, or just that the organizers somehow manage to book the best artists in the world year in and year out (many from our own EDM world) — whatever the reason, one thing is certain: this is definitely a box that needs to be checked off your bucket list.

Now, for those of you who can’t make the cross-continent voyage to that sunny valley in California — no worries, I got you covered. This week’s “Sweets” features tracks from some of the hottest acts set to smash up Coachella this year. Put on your cargo shorts, switch on the sun lamp and crank the tunes. Close your eyes and it’s almost like you’re there. OK, I said almost.

Sweets of the Week – March 2

March 2nd, 2012

Posted by Scott Willats

Stress. All weeks are not built the same, a point proven by this week. Plenty of grey-hair-causing, wrinkle-inducing. While I won’t bore you with the details of what gave rise to these symptoms, I will tell you the remedy. When a day, week or month really has you on the ropes, the best way to recover and rebuild is with a healthy soundtrack. This week I got ripped a new one, and these tracks helped keep the ship above water. Brand new tracks from Felix Cartal, FatRat and Vaski, plus some household names.

SWEETS

Pretty sure it’s safe to say that Nicky Romero is 2012. Probably my new favourite big room track. Smells like Miami.

Nicky Romero – Se7en: LISTEN TO IT HERE

This is scary. If Felix Cartal starts delivering more traditional house tracks like this one, he could be the next frontliner on the stadium circuit.

Felix Cartal – Black to White (feat. Miss Palmer): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Directly — as in minutes — before I heard this, I said “If I hear another Gotye remix, I’m never listening to that song again.” Then I heard this. What do they say about losing something? It’s always in the last place you look. Sidenote: The original version of this song just so happens to be the biggest track in the world — and if you’re a regular “Sweets” checker, you would’ve learned about it HERE back on Oct. 21. Plenty reason to booooooooookmark us!

Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know (TheFatRat Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Well, it’s finally been officially released. Ingrosso & Alesso. You are allowed to die now.

Sebastian Ingrosso & Alesso – Calling (Lose My Mind): LISTEN TO IT HERE

To be honest, I’ve never really paid much attention to Kick N Licks but this song is fart-in-my-tuna-salad-nasty!

Kicks N Licks – Time: LISTEN TO IT HERE

R3hab literally doesn’t stop does he? This flying Dutchman has more pace than Arjen Robben. (Soccer fans will get that.)

Labrinth – Last Time (R3hab Mix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

First we speak of the original. Diplo really knows how to make a smooth r&b track. The way he massages the beat to Usher’s voice is something you’d expect from producers like Danger, Darkchild or Timbaland. Sick. Then Vaski just f**ks it all up. Nasty!

I don’t have a new video for you this week; if you’re searching for one, check yesterday’s Zeds Dead post. I do, however, have something a whole lot better: that latest instalment of Scott’s Selections. Six very very very heav tracks! Be sure to pick it up.

Bombs Away!

November 1st, 2011

Posted by Scott Willats

October has passed. It’s back to reality and the cold months that await us. It’s hard not to get a tad depressed knowing that a good five months of winter are ahead, but for many of us that just means snowboarding, hockey and lots of vodka to keep us warm. And if should happen that you don’t partake of any of the aforementioned, I’ve grabbed a couple of tracks that will take you out of your misery for the time being.

The first is a relevantly new video from the boys of Bombs Away. This Australian duo are absolute wizards in the studio, and have a way of making some of the most catchy sounds with perfect hooks. I shared a couple of their songs recently, and today I’ll unveil a few more of their gems. Check ‘em out — I’m willing to bet you’ll be looking for a brand new Bombs Away T-shirt soon enough.

Thomas Hart (vocals/synth) and Sketch (guitar/vocals/DJ) aren’t your typical duo. Loud, brash and ready to rock, they are the perfect showmen. I hate comparing groups or artists, especially from the standpoint of personality, but Bombs Away are the Aussie LMFAO. They have a great way of entertaining the crowd, and nothing’s out of bounds for them. With tracks like these, the buzz is growing.

A tuff video to drop at the beginning of November, but remember: pool parties are only eight months away! A nicely even balanced track of heavy electro and top 40 pop. Oh, and there’s a little bit of eye candy, too.

Bombs Away – Super Soaker: WATCH IT HERE

Here’s a couple of remixes that I thought you might like checking out. The first is one of my favourite tracks of all time; as a kid in grade 7, I thought Coolio was the greatest rapper ever. It’s hard saying that with a straight face now, but to be naïve was a beautiful thing. Good times. The song still is a favourite of mine, and whenever it pops up on my iPod or on the radio I will never change it. Bombs Away took a song I thought was all but forgotten and put a dubstep touch on it. Judge for yourself, but I like it.

Bombs Away – Gangsters Paradise (Dubstep): LISTEN TO IT HERE

This is their take on Israel Cruz’s “Party Up.” A huge club track that will kickstart any event you’re playing at. A definite download.

Israel Cruz – Party Up (Bombs Away Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Lastly, a song that I already highlighted in that previous post — but it’s just too good to be left out if we’re talking about these guys. This remix has emotion, heart and energy. The perfect combo and an immediate fav — plus it’s free! The original isn’t bad, either.

Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know (Bombs Away Dubstep Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Bombs Away!…………………xx
