Sweets of the Week – April 27

April 27th, 2012

Posted by Scott Willats

Wow — feels like we haven’t had a Sweets for quite some time. First there was the whole Coachella thing, and then last week was a bit of a write-off. Time to get back into it! I’ve got a lot to catch up on, but only the newest for you. Leh-go!

Start off with a heater.  Designer Drugs have been informating us for quite some time, via Twitter and Facebook, that PLS DNT STP drop some of the hardest tunez out there. So what could be better than PLS DNT STP dropping an original remix over one of DD’s bangers.  This track is an anthem!

Designer Drugs-For All We Know (PLS DNT STP RMX): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Blood Music‘s LeBreton is back at it again with his new EP Steam.  Only two tracks but both of them are fresh to death. Steam chains you up in that Blood Music dungeon with maxed-out bass and a classic clap that will gnaw away at your soul. You know, in a good way. Pick it up!

Deadmau5 seems to be finding his rhythm.  It have something to do with the fact that his condo is finally finished and he’s officially moved into a place that contains not only a state-of-the-art studio, but also thousands of stuffed mice. Whatever it is, the music seems to be getting better and better.  This is spankin’ new and hot hot hot. Enjoy!

f**kmylife – Fn Pig: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Shout out to thissongissick.com for releasing this ultra-exclusive new Jack Beats remix of Flux Pavilion‘s “Daydream.”  Two huge names, one incredible sound.

Flux Pavilion – Daydreamer (Jack Beats Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

The M Machine dropped their new EP, Metropolis, earlier this week, and they remain, as ever, blog darlings. The first track has my immediate attention — and now, with any luck, yours too.

The M Machine – Immigrants: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Judging by the SoundCloud upload date, it would appear that I’m quite tardy on this one. But what the hey — I love a good deep club sound. Maya Jane Coles goes completely old school Chicago on this one, giving me a warm feeling in my special places.

Franck Roger – Bring It Back (Maya Jane Coles Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Lets get ravey! You know what that means: Skream up in a di mix, zee mi now!  Shout out to Theophilus London for providing the material to re-work.

Skream – I Stand Alone (Skream Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Flosstradamus seem to be having a moment just now. I know that sounds outrageous to some, as they’ve been dropping bangers for a while. But it does appear that a wider public is now embracing the duo from the Windy City, and that’s nothing but good news for Floss fans everywhere.

Flosstradamus x Deniro Farrar- Look At The Sky: LISTEN TO IT HERE

And how dare I even dream of making a “Sweets” without dropping the newest Killa Killa sounds.

Yo! by Mart!n McFly (The Killabits Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

But where’s the Progressive house? you say.  Why, right here: the newest from Michael Brun & Special Features.  Big room all day!

Michael Brun & Special Features – Synergy (Original Mix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Finalement, a brand new 50-minute mix from our favourite Frenchman, Gesaffelstein.  This might sound a little off-the-wall to those of you more used to traditional EDM, but variety is the spice of life, n’est-ce pas?

Gesaffelstein – Just Before The Dark Mix: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Catching Up: New Year’s Sweets

No question: Zeds Dead made this holiday season their own. After a more than impressive Toronto show at Kool Haus (which bpm:tv captured for an upcoming Spotlight), DC and Hooks decided to give the perfect encore at Wrongbar. By 9pm the lineup was already down the block.

This party used to be in a basement — now it’s sold out for days, the hardest ticket to get in the biggest city in Canada. Success! I won’t even get into the logistics of the show. Lemme just say, calmy: they did very well.

The best thing about catching one of these Bassmentality events is to see the guys in their element. I remember at a Designer Drugs show earlier this year there was a moment of chaos when things got a little out of hand and crowd started to bum rush the stage. After a minute of silence and calming everyone down, they started their set again. Not Zeds Dead, not The Killabits, not Bassmentality. When the crowd went h.a.m. they went meatloaf. You wanna knock my Pioneers? No prob bruv, we gonna wobble the f*** out of u.

Got some sweets for you right here. Not all brand new tracks — just the stuff that rocked my personal holidays.

Biz and Sam were in the giving mood this Yuletide. Here is an electro version of Kill the Noise – Dying. First release off their 8 Crazy Nights.

Kill The Noise Ft. Emily Hudson – Dying (The Killabits Electro Edit): LISTEN AND DOWNLOAD HERE

This is an old one — but it was new to me this week and is on repeat heavily. Look out for Fytch!

Nina Simone – Feeling Good (Fytch Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

I recently posted on twitter (@Sawstruck) that this track is the tune of the moment. Benga takes A-Trak‘s latest and makes it his….

Stingray – Benga Remix: LISTEN TO IT HERE

If this track wasn’t on your New Year’s Eve playlist, then you weren’t doing New Year’s right.

Disco Slut (Asco Remix) – The Sleepover, Reece Low & Meltek Feat. J.Net: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Another oldie but essential … lap it up!

Mustard Pimp – ZHM (Dada Life Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

This’ll go down nicely with that leftover turkey and eggnog.

Matt & Kim – Cameras (Gucci Vump Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Let’s take a trip to Disney’s Tron soundtrack and venture a tune from the three rudest dudes in the game.

Daft Punk – Derezzed (The Glitch Mob Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

More post-Christmas catch-up to come ….

System Recovery Mode

October 4th, 2011

I’ve been recovering from The Killabits show on Friday. There’s always something special when a group comes back home to perform for their friends and family. This was no different — in fact, this was better. Embrace Presents brought back home some of Toronto’s deadliest assassins, and they lived up to the hype.

It was always going to be a rather crazy affair, as Sam and Biz seemed to have a glow and purpose to them as the curtains opened. “It’s good to be hooooooooooooome” followed by screams and screams and screams were all you could hear — and then … slowly but surely: BASS.

I would do no justice to the show if I sat here and described it song by song. Instead, take a look at what the show was like through the innovative eyes of The New Toronto. They were on hand taking pics along with The SuperManiak, Maria Govea. Haven’t seen Maria’s yet but you can check out the fine work of Conrad and The New Toronto staff HERE.

The point of all this is that bpm:tv picked a great night to record a Live Sessions Canada, and those who couldn’t make it are in for a treat — especially with producer extraordinaires Middy and Declan O’Driscoll putting their editing touch on it.

Lots of shows to look forward to in the next couple of weeks: Dahlbeck, Skrillex, Gartner, 12th Planet … until then, here are my top tracks from over the weekend.

First up, a man who was just as good as the Killabits on Friday: Toronto’s new hope, Warrior Music.

Fragma- Toca’s Miracle (Warrior Music Remix)

Two of my fave producers from Scotland team up … kinda … sick though! Burns is a dude you should have saved! Tartan Army Stand Up!

Burns – Iced Out (Calvin Harris Remix)

Bonus Burns!

Burns – Kiss N Hold

And finally, a little album for you to feast on from Pretty Lights artist SuperVision (a.k.a. Richard Blake Hansen). The Pretty Lights Music team is becoming scary good.

SuperVision – Telescopic

Surrender to me your ears and I will show no mercy … xx

Killabits Friday

Today is the day we dubheadz have been waiting for all week. Sam and Biz continue their tour as they make a quick homecoming at The Mod Club. Tonight it’s all about the bass!

In case you’ve been situated in a wormhole for the past couple of years, I’ll explain who Sam and Biz are.  They’re a pair of DJs — a.k.a. The Killabits — who (along with their cronies Zeds Dead) are changing the face of dubstep. They have taken this genre and created a culture. Along with the folks at Embrace Presents, they started what has become a ritual on Wednesday nights in the streets of Toronto: Bassmentality.  Borgore, Skrillex, Doctor P etc. have all blessed the stage at Wrongbar because of the reputation these guys have.

When you get a chance to talk to them, it becomes easy to see where they get it. Besides being among the most innovative artists Toronto has produced in recent times, they are incredigbly open to all genres of music.  When I talked to Sam and Biz at WEMF, I referred to them as a dubstep group and was pulled up short right away: “We’re not pigeonholed to that role, we play good music.” How could I argue with Biz? Just 15 minutes earlier, these guys were playing an almost jungle-sounding track with a heavy bass influence, so nasty the clouds themselves took issue and decided to shut down the festival for half an hour with a torrential downpour. Sick.

Whatever you call them, make sure you add “hard-working,” because these guys have put in their time and effort, and now they’re enjoying the well-deserved fruits of their labour.  I’m not going to waste time talking about the songs I’m posting because the sh*t is hot — ’nuff said!  Do yourself a favour though: CATCH THESE DUDES LIVE (!!!!) and see what music is all about.  They weren’t the last set at the timeless Social Club in Toronto by accident. For those of you who can’t make it to their shows, no stress: bpm:tv has got you covered. Our Live Sessions Canada crew will be on hand at The Mod Club tonight. And if you can make it … well, be sure to load up on the Gatorade and vodka, cuz it’s gonna be a long night.  See you there!

Also, help out your Canadian artists out and buy these on Beatport!

The Killabits – Just A Fool

Deadmau5 – Raise Your Weapon (Noisia Remix) (The Killabits Moombahcore Edit)

Freedom Or Death – This Crowded Room (The Killabits Remix)

… and if that last one wasn’t enough: say goodbye to your speakers. On repeat all day!!!

The Killabits – She Said (dubstep remix): LISTEN TO THIS ONE HERE

If I were to ever try to make a song, it would be for just one reason: the off-chance they might remix it … xx

Turnt Up

I really get the sense that Tiësto is trying to shed his name’s longstanding association with trance. When I interviewed him back in the spring, there was one question that really seemed to make him stop and think: “Now that you’re the biggest DJ in the world, is there ever a moment when you wish you could just be a nobody again and start from scratch?” He paused, smirked a little bit, and told me sometimes the thought crosses his mind.

I think the point he wanted to make is that he’s not a typical trance DJ anymore. The set he performed in Toronto that night in April proved it 100%. And this remix does more of the same. Joker, the UK dubstep DJ, has been chosen by Tiësto for his latest project, and  I really like what Tiësto does with this track. More and more, the man is creeping into my heart — and, more importantly, staying relevant to today’s music. Brand new!

Joker feat. Silas – Slaughter House (Tiesto Remix)

Now, on the other side of that remix I have a brand new track from Joker — and funnily enough, it’s titled “My Trance Girl.” Is he switching sides with Tiësto switching sides? No, no, no. This is Joker: UK grime and grit at its purest. The track is clean and polished, but still gives you that dirty feel. It reminds me a lot of the track he did with Jess, but I don’t know that vocals would work here — they might ruin things. This has an anthemic quality around the push. If all trance girls get this dirty, I’m listening to the wrong genre.

Joker – My Trance Girl

Sticking with the dubstep feel, we move on to one of the best labels in the biz right now: Dim Mak. So yes, Aoki is a genius — and they have Canada’s pride and joy, Autoerotique, which is reason enough for us to support this label to the death. But what about those Villains? Their new EP Control the Future has been the bee’s knees on most of the blogs I check out. I tried it once, appreciated it and moved on. Then I tried it again … and this sh*t is heavy. I mean extremely well produced, well timed and killer electro dubstep house.

I hate labeling music, especially when you get an EP like this — because underneath all the names and genres, it’s just … good. Maybe that’s what the next genre should be called: good. I’m going to give you the “Control The Future” track to listen to today, but check the whole EP. It’s worth every penny.

Villains – Control The Future: LISTEN TO IT HERE

It’s Wednesday, and you know what that means: we’re halfway to Friday, lol. I’m trying to keep my hype levels down until at least tomorrow, but it’s growing. Can’t wait to see Biz and Sam killa killa it. Get your tickets right now!!!

Zeds Dead & Omar LinX – Rudeboy (Killabits Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Don’t forget to check out the original video — featuring some dudes I wouldn’t be surprised to see pop their headz in for a quick visit on the Pioneers.

Zeds Dead & Omar LinX – Rudeboy: WATCH THE VIDEO HERE

… we all believe in 1 thing, that if you’re doing something, make it big, let it bang, shout it loud, set it up, shut it down, just be sure to make us proud! … xx
