Attack of the Cybermen

September 21st, 2012

Posted by Gosia Mrugala

Fearless bpm:tv  bloggeuse Gosia Mrugala goes face-to-mask with the enigmatic Italian duo CYBERPUNKERS in this exclusive interview.

GOSIA MRUGALA: Where did you meet and how did you guys start working together?

CYBERPUNKERS: We met four years ago working on the console of the De Sade Cub of Milan, and we discovered we mutually have a very strong passion for the early cyberpunk style, the one that you can find in the Ridley Scott´s movie Blade Runner: an authentic masterpiece of 1982. Since we were DJs, we decided to create a format that could represent our personal interpretation of the style, pushing it in the current clubbing world. So the best thing to do, for us, was using masks to become two masked DJs! Obviously, we had to work hard for three years before the project could become true, but if we consider the results, we can definitely say that it was worth it!

GS: How is it working as a duo?

CPs: Playing as a duo has its advantages: the union of ideas and skills of two people … can reach the goals faster and more easily. Being a duo is important in our format, it gives us the chance to confront and have the certainty that every project is studied in detail — and also disagreements sometimes brings positive results. As you can imagine the world of a producer/DJ is not just music and clubs, it also needs constant promotion and visibility, and being a duo allows you to follow closely the work of people outside our offices, such as printing or labels’ offices, and promoters.

GS: “Give us a mask and we will tell the truth” — can you explain this notion?

CPs: The phrase is part of an aphorism by the famous Irish writer Oscar Wilde: “Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.” Our interpretation is for the second part of the aphorism: When we mask ourselves we are without filters and inhibitions and we give the best we can to exhibit in the best way. Our transformation with our identity has given us the ability to be clear and stand out in a unique way. It may seem a contradiction, because who wants to mask their identity to hide his “true self” from the world? But in our case the philosophy of Oscar Wilde is ideal. We are “true” if masked, and our fans know this very well!

GM: Your top three tracks at the moment?

CPs: We’re working on a new EP with 3 tracks that at the moment are our top tracks! We will reveal only the titles: “I Will Kill You,” “Shock,” and “My Life,” and soon you will be able to listen to it.

GM: Which producing software do you prefer and why?

CPs: We began to produce using Virtual Instruments and some digital synth such as Virus or Nord Lead. Then we moved to analog synth. In our studio we use Moog Voyager, Alesis Andromeda and Dave Smith Prophet 08, adding distortion with guitar pedals. We’re really satisfied with the result … since moving to analog synth, we feel we have made a huge step forward. As for our sequencer, we use Nuendo, and for effect/eq/comp we use the classic Waves. Post production (mixing and mastering) are totally made by us, in our studio, because we never felt in tune with someone outside of our project. All our tracks are and will be done entirely by us.

GM: Vinyl, CD or MP3?

CPs: When we began our careers as DJs we used vinyl, and we’re really affectionate also now, but the convenience to bring with you CDs and a laptop has no price. The advent of MP3 has revolutionized our life as DJs, at the point that you need two USB flash drives and the evening is ready to go. We use the CDs but for most of our live performances the MP3 is the master!

GM: What has been the highlight of your career so far?

CPs: We don’t believe that we have reached the peak. Very humbly we say that work takes you up, but never enough to be at the peak! In today’s world, contaminated by the Internet and a large number of factors that make you discover new music and artists every day, we must always show true value. To fly high is fine, but with feet firmly planted on the ground.

GM: What is one hobby that your fans would be surprised to find out you enjoy?

CPs: As everybody knows, to create music is not the only thing that an artist enjoys doing: we also enjoy staying in touch with our fans using social media websites (MySpace, Facebook, Twitter …) because we love to answer directly. We are often far from Milan, so when we have free time, we spend our time with our friends and family. One possibly “surprising” hobby we enjoy is rollerblading. And of course sex, alcohol and the cyberpunk life style.

GM: Who are your biggest inspirations — and what have you learned from them?

CPs: We had different inspiration, from the Sex Pistols, Ramones, The Clash, Korn, Nirvana, The Offspring, System Of A Down, Depeche Mode, Massive Attack, Tricky … but also Michael Jackson (R.I.P.), and, for sure, Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy. As you know all the biggest names in music can and will always teach different meanings of music!!

GM: What is one aspect about the music scene you wish could improve/change?

CPs: There is nothing to change in today’s music scene; maybe you could give more space to emerging artists. When we have our own label, we will certainly do it and it will become the strong point of the label … off to the young!

GM: Where do you see yourselves five years from now?

CPs: Good question! We’ll find out in 5 years …. we like surprises!

Sweets Of The Week – Identity Festival Edition

July 20th, 2012

Posted by Scott Willats

Here we go again. Back to Echo Beach — this time to see a man who hasn’t traveled to Toronto … scratch that, Canada … no, wait, scratch that, North America … in 12 years. Eric Prydz is headling the Identity Festival in Toronto on Saturday, and I am amped.

I really don’t know what to expect. We’re talking about one of the pioneers of this genre. Somebody who was bending boundaries in the studio before the term EDM had even been invented. Who was making his mark as a live performer when DJs were still mainly associated with hip-hop acts. Who’d established the pseudonymous Cirez D as a household name well before alter egos became all the rage in dance music. Basically: if you’re in Toronto this Saturday there is only one destination.

And the awesome doesn’t stop with Pryda. Other heavy names featured at Identity include none other than Nero — currently number one on the bpm:tv Hot 20 Dance Chart with their single “Must Be The Feeling.” It’s a while since I’ve seen this UK duo perform, and I’m excited about how their sound has evolved. The latest album, Welcome Reality, has been a massive success, I’m looking forward to this set — not just to see the crowd’s reaction, but to hear their choice of remixes. Should be a performance to remember.

Then there’s Madeon and Le Castle Vania: Both young, both heavy electro — and both awesome. The 18-year-old Frenchman Madeon has built a rep in Europe as something of a prodigy, as been a favorite on BBC Radio 1 for quite a while now. The Atlanta-based Le Castle Vania, meanwhile, is part of the tide of fresh blood from North America blood sweeping across face of the EDM world. Both should be great sets, so be sure to check them out.

And then there’s Excision. Canada, stand up! The dubstep demon from Kelowna, BC will definitely be excited to play such a high-profile fest in his home country. And whenever you get a bass DJ hype to play for you … well, consider your pants soiled. Be prepared to get grimy.

So with all that said, I think it only fair that this week’s Sweets should showcase the artists performing at Identity. Enjoy!

In Brief: “Sparks”

July 17th, 2012

Posted by Gosia Mrugala

I can still remember the feeling I got when I first heard “Put Your Hands Up For Detroit.” I don’t think I’ve ever been disappointed by Fedde Le Grand – and on the brand new track “Sparks” we see him come together with another talented Dutch DJ, Nicky Romero, to deliver the quintessential club banger. Look out for this one: it’s sure to get your ears ringing and your body moving. Prediction: “Sparks” is going to be one of those progressive house tracks that defines the summer of 2012!

You Gotta Say Yes To Another XS

July 11th, 2012

Posted by Scott Willats

As if summer didn’t give us enough to look forward to already (as for example, Robbie Rivera @ Maison in Toronto this Friday) — the good people at Provoke have launched a contest offering Toronto EDM fans the chance to meet a group of stellar DJs this Saturday at the unveiling of the promoter’s newest endeavour.

It’s no secret: if it’s a Thursday in Toronto and you want to hear proper house, you go to Cobra. If it’s a Friday and you need to see the hottest DJs in the company of beautiful people, you go to Maison. Now, Provoke is aiming to own Saturday nights with the introduction of Xsessive at Club XS.

To mark the occasion, Provoke is throwing a contest. Not only are they offering a full V.I.P. package (and when I say V.I.P., I mean Cedric-Gervais-in-Miami-type V.I.P..), they’re also giving the winner a chance to meet the DJs performing at the Xsessive inaugural.

Count me in! Except, alas, I’m not eligible — but I would be supremely pleased if an EDM addict like you were there to rep bpm:tv.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the DJs on the bill, here’s a quick primer to get you acquainted. Make no mistake, these guys put in work.

MANUEL DE LA MARE

This Italian will have you reppin’ Florence so hard you’ll be draped in a Fiorentina jersey by the end of the night.

A Constant Remedy

July 10th, 2012

Posted by Scott Willats

If you’re anything like me, you probably think Sound Remedy is kinda like Deadmau5 circa 2009. I mean, this guy is making next-level shit, challenging himself constantly to come up with material that’s creative and different. His basic template seems to stay the same, but that’s as close as he comes to formulaic. Otherwise, he’s constantly leaping the barriers between genres, taking rock tunes, R&B songs, house tracks and everything in between, and flipping them like Mike Holmes trying to re-sell a house.

The other day he dropped off a brand new original, and it’s everything you would expect — and more. For an artist to make my “Sweets of the Week” twice in one month is pretty insane, but SR has made the cut a whopping seven times in 2012. That’s some serious consistency. Btw, did I mention all of his tracks are FREE?! My boooooooooooooy!

Dying to see him perform live.

Sweets of the Week – July 6

July 6th, 2012

Posted by Scott Willats

Middle of July, festival season in flight, hotter than a muthafucka ….

Wait a sec: remember all those long, cold winter nights when we bundled ourselves in parkas, scarves and long johns, enduring the bitter chill so we could get to the club to see our favorite DJ rage? I certainly remember, and I’m sure you do too. So I find it hard to complain about this stifling heat we’re all suffering through. As we all know, it could. Be. Much. Much. Worse.

But yeah, it is hotter than a muthafucka.

One other thing about summer that kinda sorta blows: since most major artists are busy touring so much, new material can be lacking. Now, sometimes that’s a good thing, giving you the chance to get reacquainted with old favorites. But for a new music junkie like me, it feels like drought season. But that just means I’ve gotta search harder and longer to find something fresh for you. Plus the Calgary Stampede starts today, and I can’t leave my cowboys hanging without some new electro. Lez get it!

Oh, and did I mention it’s hotter than a muthafucka?

THE SWEETS

We start with two vastly different but equally awesome remixes of Dada Life‘s “Kick Out The Epic Motherfucker.” Which one do youuuuu like?

Dada Life – Kick Out The Epic Motherfucker (Otto Knows Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Dada Life – Kick Out The Epic Motherfucker (Datsik Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Wolfgang Gartner is bizzack — this time with a preview of his new EP. People have been saying that Gartner’s work lately has been lacking. I think that’s a testament to high how he has set the bar. While I wouldn’t put it quite so harshly, I’ll concede that I haven’t heard the old Gartner for awhile. That ended today.

Wolfgang Gartner – Casual Encounters Of The 3rd Kind EP: LISTEN TO THE PREVIEW

One-half of The Krays, Yuksek, is back with a new EP and it’s packed with killer remixes. Anything new from Aeroplane will always get my attention

Yuksek – The Edge EP: LISTEN TO THE PREVIEW

Here’s something a little different: Skrillex versus drum-and-bass. Some will love, some will hate. Either way,, this will evoke some kind of emotion from you.

Skrillex – DnB Ting: LISTEN TO IT HERE

This one, on the other hand, I know you’ll love. Whether you’ll admit it to anyone is another question.

Far East Movement – Dirty Bass (Jump Smokers Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Le Youth is on fire. The way he uses his samples, you can tell he knows his way around a DAW. Keep him on your radar

Le Youth – Memories: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Waka Flocka? Rooster in my Rari? What the hell am I talking about? Fans will know. People who don’t: trust me, you’re not missing much. But Clinton Sparks does make this pump. Worth a try.

Viceroy is an acquired taste. At first: not so much. Now: addicted.

Viceroy – Chase Us Around feat. Madi Diaz: LISTEN TO IT HERE

BANGER!!!! Basically five minutes of pure bass. I’ll take it.

Bart B More & Harvard Bass – Listen To This (D.I.M.’s Unreleased Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Hmmm. I’ve liked every Sound Remedy track I’ve ever heard. Ever. But this one lacks … something. Still, he’s earned his stripes, so I’ll let it slide. Consider it recommended on the strength of his past work.

Imogen Heap – Hide And Seek (Sound Remedy Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

You know I love me some swing. Here’s a track that will spice up your party asap.

Riva Starr, where have you been all my life? The elegant return of a true master. Look out for Canadian tour dates soon!

Excited about the upcoming IDENTITY Festival? This video should get you properly amped. If not, two words: Eric. Prydz. (Btw, if you want to win tickets to IDENTITY, mosey on over to our FB page, as in now-ish,)

Enjoy le weekend, knuckleheadz!

Falcon In Flight

July 4th, 2012

Posted by Scott Willats

Quietly — or rather, in point of fact, not so quietly — Provoke has been dropping some real bombs: in terms of tracks, events, and everything in between. Their latest release, which landed just a couple of weeks back, has more momentum than the LeBron in game five against the OKC Thunder.

The combination of Gabe Gallucci and Jed Harper on the track “Falcon” is hotter than anyone could have even expected. A minute of thumps get your pulse racing at 128. Then the keys. Strings interweaving — a slight echo, a touch of reverb, but a powerful, ringing presence. It’s the big-room feel Jed Harper is known for. And Gallucci steps in with the “air shartz,” as I like to call them, and the rest is just plain insane, mayn.

“Falcon” is big-room heavy duty all the way; add four stellar remixes from the likes of Kim Fai, Northend, Stranjah and yes, Jed Harper himself, and this release is an absolute must-have. While Stranjah’s remix takes things in a drum-and-bass direction, Kim Fai and Northend stick to that progressive template. But it’s Jed’s own remix that takes the cake here.

Sometimes you’ll get a release where the remixers try to do too much, aiming for wholesale renovation rather than a simple add-on or enhancement. Happily, this is not one of those times. Each of these artists takes what’s best about the original and adds a distinctive personal touch. You can hear their creative additions, but the track you love still shines through, intact. Maybe nothing to you, but this is something I greatly appreciated.

Iron Men

July 3rd, 2012

Posted by Scott Willats

First things first: Digital Dreams was a massive success. I talked to people as who’d traveled from as far away as California to be there, along with lots of people who call this great city of Toronto their home. The vibe was right, the crowd was sexy and the music was nutz. There was a ton of media coverage, so I’m sure you’ll continue to hear plenty about it over the next few days. Stay tuned for an upcoming bpm Spotlight episode that will feature the interviews we were lucky enough to score with Afrojack, Kaskade, Major Lazer, Adam K, Art Department and many more.

Today’s post, however, is all about Iron & Water, the upcoming new release from Gingy & Bordello on Turbo Recordings. This could be the release of the summer. The anthemic title track has the sound of a number that could start the night or finish it — maybe both, on the right night.

While it may seem like an oxymoron, this duo have managed to evolve as artists while sticking closely to what has become their signature sound. It’s a brand of consistency that’s refreshing.

“Panopticon” and “Ausbruch” round out the EP, and both are quality material. “Ausbruch,” to me, sounds like one of those tracks the average DJ just can’t wait to play. The perfect techno template, it gives you the freedom to add your own creative touch during live sets, and while also allowing you the opportunity to loop continuously — the beat never grows redundant, the true hallmark of a classy production.

This Toronto duo may not be known for producing quantity, but the strength of Iron & Water affirms their reputation for consistent quality. And the real winner here is Turbo Recordings. Tiga‘s Montreal-based imprint has scooped up a couple diamonds in the rough, and will reap the rewards as their careers take off. With this release following hard on Ado’s Pressure EP, featuring the addictive “Right On,” it’s clear that Turbo is at the top of its game right now.

If you find yourself in Toronto on July 14, be sure to check out the Iron & Water release party at Cinecycle. CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS.

Sweets of the Week – Canada Day Weekend

June 29th, 2012

Posted by Scott Willats

Dunno about you, but this weekend feels like Christmas to me. The dance music season is in full swing, and Canada is playing host to the best parties in the world! Can you feel it?

This is our weekend. There’s Bassmentality — sorry a Super Bassmentality happening in Ottawa, along with the Escapade fest. As for Toronto … well, you may have heard about a little something called the Digital Dreams festival. Homie! Iz going down. I said, can you feel it?

In this spirit of celebration, I’ve put together an extra-special “Sweets” — not so difficult, when you consider that this has been one of the better weeks of 2012 in terms of new music. Special praise for The Knocks, Zeds Dead and, of course, Dillon Francis. CAN YOU FEEL IT?

THE SWEETS

I love Ryan Enzed. If ever there was producer who deserved to be famous worldwide — as in right this minute — it’s this guy.

Brand New Zeds Dead

June 28th, 2012

Posted by Scott Willats

I couldn’t possibly wait for Friday’s” Sweets of the Week’” to share this one. DC and Hooks — better known as Zeds Dead — are back in the lab brewing up some remix shit. This time they’ve taken a personal favorite of mine, “The Fight Of My Life” from Colin Munroe and Lil Wayne arch-enemy Pusha T, and slathered it with grime sauce till it sizzles.

Right, I know I’m being corny as f*ck — but this track is massive. How massive? So massive I’m doing a post just for the f*cking two-minute preview. That’s how massive.

Colin Munroe feat. Pusha T – The Fight Of My Life (Zeds Dead Remix): LISTEN TO THE PREVIEW HERE

Plugggggggggg!
