Q&A With LE CASTLE VANIA

August 1st, 2012

Atlanta, Georgia isn’t exactly known as hotbed for electronic music, but LE CASTLE VANIA (a.k.a. Dylan Eiland) is doing his bit to change that. He burst on the scene in 2006 with a buzz-worthy remix of “Black Eyes” by fellow Atlantans Snowden, and quickly earned a rep as an artist to watch. Part of the new wave of American DJ/producers who’ve shifted EDM’s centre of gravity Stateside, he’s earning rave reviews this summer as one of the stars of the Identity Festival tour (alongside the likes of Eric Prydz, Nero, Wolfgang Gartner and Madeon), while busily prepping his debut album. Here, he chats with Toronto’s DJ Soundbwoy (a.k.a. Chris Wilson).

CLICK HERE to follow DJ Soundbwoy on Twitter.

DJ SOUNDBWOY: Where did the name Le Castle Vania come from?

LE CASTLE VANIA: Umm, it’s a boring story. There’s nothing really interesting about it — I just basically made it up.

DJS: What made you get into DJing?

LCV: Well, first thing, I just really loved music and electronic music. The thing that inspired me, though, to really start DJing was when I was 16: I tried to sneak into this club to see some DJs, but it was an 18 and up club. I had a fake ID, but got totally rejected at the door. A bunch of my homies were with me and they had all gotten in, so I had to go sit in the car and wait for them. The car happened to be parked behind the club, and as I was chilling there, bummed that I didn’t get in, I just stared seeing all the DJs coming and going out the back door. Something just clicked in my head and I was, like, if I was a DJ I could get in wherever I wanted, see the DJs I wanted to see, and be a part of that crew and lifestyle. So that was kind of thing that inspired me to start producing and DJing.

DJS: Was it always your main goal to start producing music?

LCV: I was always more inspired by writing and creating music, ’cause that’s where my passion is. DJing, though, is kind of like the reward for creating music, ’cause that’s when you get to unleash it on the audience and see people go off to it.

DJS: You don’t hear of many electronic music artists from Atlanta. That being said, what were your musical influences and how do you try to incorporate that into your sound?

LCV: Atlanta is kind of known for being more of a hip-hop city as far as music goes. But there’s actually a lot more going on in Atlanta — there’s an electronic scene that has grown there, and there’s always been a cool indie rock scene there as well. But you know, my whole sound and vibe is very inspired by the fusion of electronic music and rock music. I sometimes deviate from it and do a lot of different things, such as the Cee-Lo remix, which had a lot more disco influences. I try to take influences from all over and from all the different music that I like.

Cee-Lo – Fuck You (Le Castle Vania Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

DJS: How did the “Fuck Yess” monthly party come about?

LCV: Fuck Yess was a party I started in Atlanta because at the time there was no club or venue that you could go to and hear the type of music I was producing — like that indie electro, more aggressive dance music with an indie rock influence. So basically the vibe of the party is buck wild-ass people and music.

DJS: What’s the weirdest or coolest thing you’ve experienced playing a venue or festival?

LCV: The coolest thing is always connecting with the people like when you play at a big festival and you’ve got thousands of people with all that energy coming back at you. As for the weird stuff, I’ve experienced so much — but what happens on the road stays on the road.

DJS: Having been an underground DJ who’s emerged onto the wider EDM scene, how do you feel about A-Trak’s article in The Huffington Post about “button pushers”?

LCV: I’m not going to go into any comments about other artists and their opinions. What matters to me is that I came up learning to DJ on vinyl, and learned the ropes the right way and the real way. But at the end of the day, these kids are coming out to part — so if someone is screening a presentation that sets it off, and those kids have a fun time or it heightens the experience to a level they couldn’t do otherwise, then I ain’t mad at them. Everyone just needs to just chill the f**k out and let everybody do their hustle. If that’s not how you want to do things, then you don’t do things that way — you know what I’m saying? We just got to let everybody do their thing. Nobody needs to be trying call anybody out or trying to hate on everyone. The scene is growing and let’s just be happy about that. Every act in electronic music that gets bigger creates more opportunity for every other act in electronic music, and that’s the reality of it. I respect everyone’s hustle. Let’s just let them do their shit the way they want to do it.

Kaskade – Turn It Down (Le Castle Vania Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

DJS: With the release of your full-length album coming up, what can fans expect to hear?

LCV: Well, I mean, it’s an album so the whole point is to create a journey. But you’ll just have to wait and hear it. It is definitely a diverse range of my sound, though.

DJS: What is one thing our readers should definitely know about Le Castle Vania?

LCV: There’s only one thing I want readers to know, and it’s my music. Go check out the Web site — there’s tons of free stuff for download.

RAPID-FIRE ROUND

First thing you do when you wake up in the morning?

On tour I sleep until about 2-3pm, and then I go out and check the stage setup for that particular show.

When you were a kid what did you want to be when you grew up?

An animator/cartoonist.

Must-have item on your rider?

Bombay Sapphire.

Motto you live by?

“Nobody gets out alive, bring it hard!”

Turntables or CDJs?

I learned on turntables, but basically my shows got so crazy that the needle would skip and cause too many technical issues, so I had to switch to CDJs.

Sweets Of The Week – Identity Festival Edition

July 20th, 2012

Posted by Scott Willats

Here we go again. Back to Echo Beach — this time to see a man who hasn’t traveled to Toronto … scratch that, Canada … no, wait, scratch that, North America … in 12 years. Eric Prydz is headling the Identity Festival in Toronto on Saturday, and I am amped.

I really don’t know what to expect. We’re talking about one of the pioneers of this genre. Somebody who was bending boundaries in the studio before the term EDM had even been invented. Who was making his mark as a live performer when DJs were still mainly associated with hip-hop acts. Who’d established the pseudonymous Cirez D as a household name well before alter egos became all the rage in dance music. Basically: if you’re in Toronto this Saturday there is only one destination.

And the awesome doesn’t stop with Pryda. Other heavy names featured at Identity include none other than Nero — currently number one on the bpm:tv Hot 20 Dance Chart with their single “Must Be The Feeling.” It’s a while since I’ve seen this UK duo perform, and I’m excited about how their sound has evolved. The latest album, Welcome Reality, has been a massive success, I’m looking forward to this set — not just to see the crowd’s reaction, but to hear their choice of remixes. Should be a performance to remember.

Then there’s Madeon and Le Castle Vania: Both young, both heavy electro — and both awesome. The 18-year-old Frenchman Madeon has built a rep in Europe as something of a prodigy, as been a favorite on BBC Radio 1 for quite a while now. The Atlanta-based Le Castle Vania, meanwhile, is part of the tide of fresh blood from North America blood sweeping across face of the EDM world. Both should be great sets, so be sure to check them out.

And then there’s Excision. Canada, stand up! The dubstep demon from Kelowna, BC will definitely be excited to play such a high-profile fest in his home country. And whenever you get a bass DJ hype to play for you … well, consider your pants soiled. Be prepared to get grimy.

So with all that said, I think it only fair that this week’s Sweets should showcase the artists performing at Identity. Enjoy!

Sweets of the Week – Coachella Edition

April 13th, 2012

Posted by Scott Willats

It’s no secret that Coachella, which kicks off today, is the festival all the “cool kids” swarm to. Maybe it’s the fact that no media are admitted, or just that the organizers somehow manage to book the best artists in the world year in and year out (many from our own EDM world) — whatever the reason, one thing is certain: this is definitely a box that needs to be checked off your bucket list.

Now, for those of you who can’t make the cross-continent voyage to that sunny valley in California — no worries, I got you covered. This week’s “Sweets” features tracks from some of the hottest acts set to smash up Coachella this year. Put on your cargo shorts, switch on the sun lamp and crank the tunes. Close your eyes and it’s almost like you’re there. OK, I said almost.

North America’s Resident DJ

December 6th, 2011

Posted by Scott Willats

Last week I received Fire & Ice, the brand new double disc from bpm:tv favourite Kaskade. I know I did a quick little post when the CD was leaked, but I thought we owed it to Kaskade to give him a thorough review — after all, when he released Dynasty we were guests of honour at his party in Miami. So I took the CD, uploaded it to my PC, and sat down to give the entire double disc a listen in one sitting. Now, for someone who has severe ADD like I do, it’s hard sometimes to just listen to a full track before wanted to change it to hear another that would be good to mix it with. And to be honest, my immediate thought was: Kaskade is known for a great progressive sound, but sometimes his tracks can linger a little too long. How can I sit through it all? But it was a lot easier than expected — and now I look forward to sharing it with you.

Here’s a simple breakdown of what this album is all about: you get Kaskade’s beats, but you also get a s**t-load of features and collabs. These latter tracks all seem to reflect a strong chemistry with the featured artists, furtheringthe impression that said artists have done some tinkering of their own with the songs. Most of the time this is for the best, so it’s nothing to worry about.

The kicker is the second disc — the Ice version — which features Kaskade’s own remixes of all 10 tracks from the first disc. So if you’re listening to disc one (Fire) and you’re worried that the album isn’t sounding much like Kaskade … relax: there’s a whole other CD devoted to his distinctive touch.

Overall, this album finds Kaskade at his peak. He seems perfectly comfortable with where he is right now as an artist. Known worldwide and finally establishing a sound that he can call his own, Kaskade was clearly in top form during making of this album — and if you like what he’s done before, I have a strong feeling you’re going to like this.

Fire

Eyes – ft Mindy Gledhill: This track is that perfect opener — and with all the remixes we’re hearing now, it’s obvious that EDM fans have really embraced the song. It grows into something you knew it was always going to be. This intro lets you know what the album is going to be like, and it lives up to the hype. Mindy’s vocals on it are absolutely priceless as well. A perfect start.

Turn It Down w/Rebecca & Fiona: The perfect template of how you make a hit. The minute this song was released, I knew it was going to be the flagship track. This is the relaxed version to say the least — but it still has a great energy. “I hold my breath when I hear lies.” The lyrics give you more of an idea of what you’re going to hear throughout the album.

Lessons in Love ft. Neon Trees: Tyler Glenn is becoming a great musician, and his vocals on this track reinforce that fact. This is one of those “stand up for your rights” songs in terms of the heavy beat and dramatic chords to go along with Tyler’s emotion in the lyrics. It may be a little too poppy and predictable — but that’s why disc two is there, right?

Lick it w/Skrillex: Well, well, well … look who made the cut. Skrillex has had the most amazing year of any artist I’ve ever seen. If Deadmau5 became famous overnight, Skrillex has become famous during breakfast. The combination of the two artists really works well here — and not in the way you’re probably thinking. Sure, it has a dubstep feel and the wobbles to match, but it really sounds like Kaskade gave Skrillex a perfect template to play with and Skrillex chose to respect the track and keep simple. And with Kaskade, simple works!

Love – ft. Haley: Bam! These two are like Bonnie and Clyde together. The track starts off with a deep cutoff filter decreasing quickly, with dramatic chords bumping in the background until you hear Haley’s voice arise. To be honest, I don’t think she actually has such a great voice. But when it’s on a Kaskade track it just sounds a lot better … no, wait: a ton better. The chords and tempo seem to fit her breathy sound. And one thing she has on this song is incredible emotion. It’s a track that could be alllllllll over dancefloors in the next eight months. Expect to hear it sooooon! “Hey hey you you, one more time will get us through, turn the clock so we don’t see …” Beauty!

Let Me Go – ft. Marcus Bentley: This is my type of track.  Imagine a long train ride, just staring out the window lost in thought.  This is your background music.  Maybe this sounds a little “can I borrow a feeling” to you — but that’s the type of vibe this track is made for.  A thinker song.  Not that the lyrics necessarily have anything to do with that; Marcus Bentley paints a sick story that is better to be interpreted by the individual listener. The sounds aren’t too heavy, but they aren’t exactly calm either.  A ton of build-ups in this song, with one killer payoff around 3:30.

Waste Love w/Quadron: Diversity is the beauty of our world.  Quadron has a very indie poet vibe, and she wouldn’t fit into a typical progressive house track … or would she?  Well, she did — and with bliss. Kaskade’s production brilliance is in full evidence on this one. He has created a somewhat jazzy house track that can still be bumped at your favourite club without slowing down the down too much.

Ice w/Dada Life and Dan Black: Simply put, my fav track on the album.  It has everything you could love. Dan Black is a genius that we here at bpm:tv have been talking about forever, it seems. Dada Life is one of the biggest names in EDM today, and Kaskade seems the perfect mediator to bring them together in creating an anthem. I talked it up when I first heard the leak, and I stick to my story.  This is your track!

How Long w/Inpetto & Late Night Alumni: The vocals on this track are second to none.  Dark, warm and sexy.  However, in my opinion it’s a little too “penthouse-suite-early-40s-Disaronno-on-the-rocks-drinking sounds.” Just my opinion.  I’m not quite ready to embrace this type of track; however, for many of you mature, grown and sexy folks, this song might get you pregnant!

Room for Happiness – ft. Skylar Grey: Wow, this music.  The combination of Skylar and Kaskade gives it a very soundtracky sound — but with such emotion. I’m not much for interpretive dance, but this song screams for it. And to give the songs its full merit, I would gladly sit through the whole performance and give it my undivided attention.  One thing that needs to be said about this album, by the way, is that the lyrics on most songs are incredible.  That’s rare to find in an EDM album. “Don’t be fooled by your emptiness.”

This album, in my opinion, is one of the best EDM releases of the past 10 years, showcasing the insane diversity that our artists have achieved.  Sure, he could have dropped another strictly progressive house CD and it would have sold just as much and been just as popular — but Kaskade did something I admire in my favourite producers: he challenged himself to be a great musician, and did so to great success. The man is already one of the biggest names in our genre, and still he wants to be better. That’s inspiring to producers, DJs and fans alike.  He didn’t need to throw in the Ice disc, but he wanted to.  He wanted to play around with more of his ideas, and give us more material to work with in the bargain. For that, I thank him!

It’s the refusal to accept complacency that defines extraordinary people in any field, and Kaskade is the perfect example.  Verdict:  Buy the album!

Sweets of the Week

November 18th, 2011

Posted by Scott Willats

Hola amigos! Happy Friday to all! I had a Thomas Edison moment the other day and thought I would share: I think it’s time to have a contest for all the independent DJs out there. I want to hear your mixes! Nothing is official yet, just thinking outside the box here, but I think it should be 10-minute mixes with whatever tune selections you choose, the best mix to be showcased on our site and posted throughout our social media networks. Again nothing’s written in stone yet, but it’s something for all you bedroom producers and DJs to think about. Let me know what you think — hit me up at @Sawstruck or on the bpm:tv Facebook page.

Excited? Good, because I have some sweets here that are definitely mix-worthy. Let’s get to it!

SWEETS

One of Sweden’s Rookies of the Year is back with a remix, and it’s exactly what you would expect: a big progressive sound made for stadiums. I swear, all the Swedish artists need to get together and do a joint tour. (And I need to copyright that idea.)

Titanium (Alesso Remix) PREVIEW: LISTEN TO IT HERE

A week after I posted about his 52-songs-in-52-weeks challenge, ZHU releases an absolute beast of a remix for week 9. This time the West Coast electro whiz kid takes on a Canadian household name, and gives Lights‘ new track “Toes” a progressive trance feel. The result will be playing from The Hoxton to The Guvernment in no time.

Lights – Toes (ZHU Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Bart B More is more than just an up-and-coming DJ nowadays. The kid is official. Mr. Bart Van der Meer’s remix of Cubic Zirconia is the evolution of an anthem. Keeps it fresh and funky at the beginning to ease us in, only to take us to the absolute height of aggression at 2:00. A must-have.

Cubic Zirconia – Take Me High (Bart B More Remix Edit): LISTEN TO IT HERE

FREE, FREE, FREE! Did I get your attention? Remember Caesars‘ almost cult classic track “Jerk It Out”? A couple years back you couldn’t watch five minutes of commercials without hearing this track. Well it’s reared its ugly head again — but this time its face is filthy. Sawgood has decided to add a few kicks and drums — plus a s**tload of attitude — to spice it up a bit. This track is so sexy you’ll be happy to jerk it out all over the dance floor. What am I talking about?

Caesars – Jerk It Out (Sawgood Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

One thing I love is hearing an artist take on a song that’s in a completely different lane. I love seeing how the producer makes up for those pieces in the track that need to be changed. This one is a must-hear.  I suggest you listen to Two Door Cinema Club’s original, and then check Feed Me’s version right after. Spectacular!

Two Door Cinema Club – What You Know (Feed Me Cover Remix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

I’m a little tardy on this one, but it is without a doubt my track of the week. Le Castle Vania has been releasing some of the heaviest remixes over the past year, while staying pretty low-key. This is going to change all that. I’ve been in love with Kaskade‘s “Turn it Down” from the minute I heard it — that is, until I heard this. The ATLien takes what already is an arena anthem and turns it into the ultimate banger. Simply put, THIS IS HUGE! Check the footage of him dropping it at Escape from Wonderland. The audio is a little dodgy so be sure to cop the tune in all its 320 glory. Buy it!

BONUS SWEET!

Have a good weekend! Boys Noize next week. It’s going downnnnnnnnnn……………………….xx

Sweets of the Week

October 27th, 2011

Posted by Scott Willats

Yes, it’s only Thursday. But I have a special post for you tomorrow, so I thought I’d share what I’m feeling this week a day earlier rather than not at all.

First of all, this was a huge week for new releases. First comes from a duo out of France, who released the album people have been waiting some little while for. Audio, Video, Disco finally dropped on Tuesday– and unfortunately for our friends Justice, many people in Internetland had already gotten their paws on it weeks earlier. Without dissecting it at length (because there are plenty, and I mean plenty of “critics” doing that), I’ll just say: I think it’s a good album. Different, just like Cross was four years ago.

The other huge release comes from a bpm:tv staple and a personal favourite interview of mine: Kaskade dropped a double album, Fire & Ice — and if you know anything  at all about Kas, you know it’s heavy and well thought-out.

The first disc is called Fire and features collaborations on every track. A lot of good vocals and catchy strings: everything that makes up today’s poppy sound — and that’s with nothing to be ashamed of. The second disc, Ice, is all songs remixed by Kaskade. Admittedly, two discs’ worth is a lot of Kaskade — but he’s earned it, and I can recommend picking it up. “Turn it Down (Fire Version)” is my fav track, but all of them have a big room sound. For the parties where there are more “top 40″ girls than you know what to do with, this is the album to play.

So without further delay, let’s get into the tracks I’ve been feeling this the week.

Kaskade’s remix of Kaskade’s track “Ice (Ice Version)”. Simple enough to understand, right?

Ice (Kaskade’s ICE Mix) [with Dan Black]: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Look, it was always going to be so easy to dislike the Justice album. Though the entirety isn’t my cup of tea, there are very special gems in there. This is more than a track to me. It’s elegance and sophistication that I would loooooooove to see live at a festival (which is what I think this whole album is meant for).

Justice – Ohio: LISTEN TO IT HERE

Sprinkle a little Brazil on a lot of Canada, and this is what you get. Alex Mind makes a good track great.

Deadmau5 – Not Exactly (Alex Mind Re-fix): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Someone call for some dub?

The M Machine – Promise Me A Rose Garden (K Theory Bootleg): LISTEN TO IT HERE

The Boomzers are back! And they have a heavy, loud and uptempo in-your-face track to prove it. If your not familiar with The Boomzers: they’re an Italian electro duo. Fans of Bloody Beetroots, Crookers, The “S” or Fare Soldi? You should pick this up, then.

The Boomzers – We Are Back EP (Teaser): LISTEN TO IT HERE

There’s something about this track, just like there’s something about Nico Jaar. Late night music …

Sneaky Sound System – Big (Nicolas Jaar’s Always By Your Side Version): LISTEN TO IT HERE

Lastly, a brand spanking new track remixed by Cosmic Kids. And check out Holy Ghost! when they play The Hoxton in Toronto early in Novemeber.

The Monday Mash

September 12th, 2011

Another weekend blown by and the music was heavy, the brain is hurting and the liver is shot. Guess what? I’d do it all again. No time to detox when you’re going as hard as sheetrock.

Friday was a success with both parties and I was happy to see some bpm:tv fans show up and enjoy the festivities. The Poupon EP is special, people — pick it up!!

A little on the sluggish side today, and it’s Monday, so I won’t waste your time with a lot of dialogue. In fact I won’t waste it with any.

Here are three tracks that came out this weekend that I am completely in love with.

Kaskade: “Turn It Down”
First is a big room track from bpm:tv fave Kaskade. Tune is an absolute monster and I’m finding it really funny how we take Kaskade’s production for granted. This guy represents consistency. Hope, wait, glad you enjoy it!! BUY KASKADE’S MUSIC ON BEATPORT
